Abstract
I t is important to keep the cohesion and coherence when writing; this is where the use of cohesive devices starts to be taken into account. This study sought the types of cohesive devices used by undergraduate students in their writing. The qualitative discourse analysis was used as the design of this research. The data were collected from seven undergraduate students as the respondents who were in the 6th semester at a private university in Aceh. These respondents were asked to write a descriptive text approximately 200 words in length and they were given forty-five minutes to finish their writing. The result unveiled that the type of cohesion devices which was majorly used was addition, as there are 94% of the additive device usage. Then, 75% refers to the use of cohesive devices as comparison, 56% as consequential, and 40% as temporal device. In can be concluded that the students use more addition in writing. As a suggestion, it is essential to shed light on their ability to employ cohesive devices more on other types in balance as it is necessary in contrasting, comparing, sequencing, giving exception, and illustrating.

This study was aimed at 1). describing what kinds of cohesive device mostly occured in the students' sentences, 2). describing how to apply cohesion theory in the sentence-based writing class, and 3). finding out whether the use of cohesion theory gives its positive significance to cohesion of the students' sentences. This is an action research study employing two cycles. The subject of the study was 24 students of group 2, in a class of SBW, and the object of the study was students' sentences created by the students in the teaching and learning process. The result of the study shows that cohesive devices mostly employed by the students are references followed by lexical, conjunction and substitution. Moreover, the students never used ellipsis in the students' sentences. In the teaching and learning process, cohesion theory was given to the students in two cycles. The first cycle focused on introducing the cohesion theory and its kinds of cohesive devices. Then, in the next cycle the students learned about Halliday and Hasan Taxonomy. Based on the result of the study, teaching SBW using cohesion theory gives its positive significance by varied cohesive device used by the students. It can be seen from the analysis of the students' sentences from pre-test, paragraph 1, paragraph 2, paragraph 3 and post-test. The students also give positive responses upon its teaching and learning process using cohesion theory based on the pre and post-test questionnaire data. It is hoped that the result of the study gives positive contribution to the students in preparing them to write in bigger contexts such as paragraph-based writing, genre-based writng and academic writing in the next coming semesters.
Abstract In EFL context, writing is the most difficult skill to master. Saudi students of English, find it very difficult to construct a coherent written essay in English. The difficulties lie not only in the poor organization, the inappropriate thesis statement, the inadequacy of providing examples and details, the limited vocabulary but also the misuse of cohesive devices. Cohesion and coherence are considered as the two important features of good writing. So much attention should be paid to generating and organizing ideas in general and to the role of cohesive devices in particular. This study will make an important contribution to the basic issue in educational research, as it will provide a description of cohesive devices used in descriptive compositions written by Saudi University Students majoring in English. It is expected that the study might help to determine the relation between the use of cohesive devices and the quality of writing. It also specifies the common characteristics that the students share with regard to the choice and use of cohesive devices. An understanding of students' use of cohesive devices can help pave the way for preparation of writing course materials and upgrading of teaching and learning process to best suit the learners of English in Saudi Arabia. The technique for eliciting information employed was an achievement test. A sample of 50 Saudi female students was asked to write essays in English that were assessed by the researcher. The students were all majoring in English in the third year. Halliday and Hassan's (1976) model was selected as the most comprehensive framework for the analysis of the cohesive features in the student's writing. Analysis of the data consisted of investigating the relationship of these devices with scores of writing. The study concluded by bringing together the key findings, recommendations for EFL teachers and suggested areas for further research. This research aims to analyse a piece of argumentative writing produced by fifth semester of Darussunnah students in a term of cohesion issues of discourse analysis. The cohesive devices are viewed as a structure of analysis to investigate the grammatical and lexical cohesion in writing. Qualitative and quantitative (mixed method) were applied in analysing the data. The quantitative analysis investigates the frequency and percentage of errors committed in student’s writing. Qualitative analysis were employed to investigate linguistic description and the explanation of the cohesion produced by student’s writing. The result showed that students have performed the cohesive devices. However, students need to improve the use of cohesive device, especially in grammatical cohesion to result higher level of cohesion.
Cohesion and coherence are important aspects of the structure of an academic written paper, as they have an influence on the readability and logical flow of arguments in a text. Cohesion refers to the logical flow and connections in a text and can be achieved through the use of devices that link sentences together, in search of logical flow between ideas embedded in sequential sentences. Coherence refers to the unity or togetherness of a text as a whole and is achieved through the effective grouping and arrangement of ideas in a logical order. In academic writing, paragraphs are essential to the structure of a text. Information and ideas are sorted into paragraphs to make the writing more logical and to ensure that arguments flow and develop logically. To achieve cohesion and coherence, paragraphs and sentences need to be clearly linked to each other to logically form a whole. Entitled "Developing Cohesion and Coherence in Writing", this monograph discusses the relevance of textual cohesion and coherence for learners of English as a foreign language. The study was conducted at Josina Machel Secondary School 1 and involved a mixed methodology for data collection, requiring qualitative and quantitative methods in data analysis. The method for collecting data included both formal and structured interviews, carried out on two grade eleven and five grade twelve English language teachers, together with 200 grade twelve pupils. The interviews were conducted face-to-face. The questionnaires were based on close-ended and open-ended questions. However different reports having shown that learners' incohesive and incoherent writing originate from lack of motivation, self-confidence and anxiety, this report comes to scientifically add that there are other factors contributing to such inappropriate writing, namely: less exposure to writing, crowded streams, inefficient teaching methodologies, lack of basic knowledge on punctuation, and insufficient knowledge about textual cohesion and coherence. All these reasons were proved in five hypothesis from which one was not confirmed. Recommendations in this treatise refer that cohesion and coherence should be promoted and deductively planned and taught in class; and teachers should play a role of "cohesive and coherent writing encouragers". To achieve such goal, this study proves different strategies suitable for classroom adoption.

This research aims at investigating the type of cohesive devices in students’ writing as a part of discourse analysis. Thus, it explores sentence correlation and meaning as a whole discourse and figures out inappropriate use of the devices. This research is conducted qualitatively to the students of English Letters of Universitas Teknokrat Indonesia Bandar Lampung and employs Halliday and Hasan’s (1976) conceptual framework. Further, examining the grammatical cohesion through document, this research deeply looks at the data in form of sentences. The researcher found 122 grammatical cohesive devices from three essays. Furthermore, the researcher also found 5 inappropriate uses of cohesive devices; it includes 2 additive conjunctions, 2 adversative conjunctions, and 1 temporal conjunction. It is also noted that the lacking understanding and awareness about cohesion especially on grammatical cohesion leads the students to use inappropriate cohesive devices. It then problematizes the sem...

Students are expected to have an writing skill when they are at university which can be assumed as a new skill to learn since they were not introduced to such skill during their high school period. Based on preliminary observation, students still lack of the textual from which they struggle with the cohesiveness of certain text genre. In English Department of IAIN Padangsidimpuan, the students have to write a discussion text as their final semester test. This research was designed as qualitative research. The subjects in this research were the sixth semester students of Writing II class at English Department of IAIN Padangsidimpuan. The data were collected from students' discussion texts which will be written as the final semester test. The data were analyzed by using the theory introduced by Halliday and Hasan. Data were analyzed qualitatively. The procedure of qualitative research included: 1) data reduction, it was begun from the data collection until data analysis when the data have been obtained. Data were given codes; 2) data display, it included organizing and entering the data into the table in order to know what type and the total of cohesion used in writing discussion text. The analysis was concerned with: grammatical cohesion (reference, substitution, ellipsis and conjunction), lexical cohesion (reiteration and collocation) were found in the students' writings. the researcher found 6 texts about dating, 2 texts about the advantages and disadvantages of internet and the other theme only 1 text in every theme. After being analyzed of the data, the researcher found 28.10 % occurred about reference in all the text, then 5.94% for substitusion, 61.62%, for conjunction. While, there is no the ellipsis, reiteration and collocation found in the discussion text of final semester test used by students. Thus, the dominant cohesion aspect occurred in these text was a conjunction. It was 61.62 % arround the text.

In ESL context, learners may have less attention to the use of conjunctions. In fact, the use of conjunctions in L2 learners' writings is crucial since it is one type of cohesive devices. This paper aims to find the cohesive devices of conjunctions used by the learners. Through analyzing eight learners' essays, the writer found 37 forms and 12 types of conjunctions in the learners' essays. The most significant form of conjunctions was'and', whereas the most significant types of conjunction was'addition'. Moreover, the writer also found some inappropriate use of conjunctions, which are grouped into five, namely, unclassified, wrong mechanism, L1 interference, wrong forms of conjunctions, and grammatical error.

A survey of the pass rate of English language in Eswatini revealed that many candidates fail to credit the subject. Therefore, the opportunity to enroll in tertiary institutions or immediately seek for employment is either lost or delayed (for those who credit English after several upgrading attempts). The examination reports also revealed that many candidates failed the essay type of questions, which carry weight because many fail to construct cohesive and coherent texts (http://www.examscouncil.org.sz/). This report ignited our interest to investigate the linguistic resources available for teaching cohesion in English in secondary schools in the Kingdom of Eswatini. Therefore, we analysed the nature of content on cohesion in secondary school textbooks used in Eswatini, and examined students’ ability in using grammatical cohesive devices to combine ideas within and across sentence boundaries (intra-/inter-sentential cohesion). Secondary school students were given language exercises drawn from sampled simplified texts to combine ideas into cohesive texts. Linguistic and document analyses were employed to analyze data on language experimental exercises and the content in prescribed textbooks. The range of conjuncts used and frequency of their use to realize inter-/intra-sentential cohesion were evaluated. The occurrences of grammatical cohesive devices in the textbooks were also rated. The results showed limitations in the depth of content on grammatical cohesive devices in both prescribed textbooks and their use in students’ sampled simplified texts. The significance of conjuncts in intra-/inter-sentential cohesion is not given much attention in prescribed textbooks in Eswatini. There is a need to purposefully add content on grammatical cohesive devices in the design of English language textbooks used at this level since English is used as a second language.
