A unit of course peculiar to both NCE and Degree Students in Social Studies was taught. SOS 221 titled; Issues and Problems of National Development for NCE Students and SSE 225 titled; Issues and Problems of Modern Society was broken down and presented sequentially to learners at different levels; the difficulty of the learning task varied according to the level of learners involved. In all 60 students, 30 from each level were involved. The research design was the posttest only control group design, which allows research to be conducted without any pretest. Results showed a clear-cut conclusion on the effectiveness of mastery learning approach on students’ performance as students in the two categories performed better in Social Studies compared with conventional approach to learning. This result was found to be significant at the 0.05 level. Some deductions were made on the results and the need for further research work is advocated.

The study adopted the pretest, posttest, control group quasi-experimental research design. The population for the study comprised primary three pupils in Ondo State. The sample consisted of 102 primary three pupils, who were selected using multistage sampling procedure. Ondo central senatorial district was selected from the three senatorial districts in the state. In the senatorial district, two local government areas were selected using simple random sampling technique. Furthermore, two schools were selected from each of the local governments using purposive sampling technique. The criteria used in the selection were that: they were accessible, far from each other, and ready to participate in the study. In each of the schools, one primary three intact class was purposively selected based on the fact that pupils in primary three are more matured, more experienced, and fit for the task than pupils in either primary one or two. The two intact classes in each of the LGAs were randomly assigned to experimental and control group. In the first LGA, the two intact classes were assigned to brainstorming instructional strategy (experimental group) and conventional teaching method (control group) while in the second LGA, the classes were assigned to concept mapping instructional strategy (experimental group) and conventional teaching method (control group). Therefore, there were two experimental groups and two control groups. The two control groups were merged as one at the level of analysis. Pupils in the three groups were taught the same topics from Social Studies primary three curriculum. Three response

The study was a correlational type. The sample of the study consisted of three thousand three hundred and seven (3307) pupils and four hundred and twenty five (425) teachers that were selected through multi-stage sampling technique among primary five pupils and their teachers in South Western Nigeria. The instrument used for the data collection include: Teacher Assessment Style Questionnaire (TSQ) and English Language Achievement Test (ELAT). Two research questions were raised in the course of the study. Multiple Regression Statistical Method was used for data analysis. Results indicated that significant relationship existed among the variables of interest. It was therefore recommended that more studies on various disciplines were needed in Nigeria so that efforts at improving the standard of education could be enhanced.

It determined the level of involvement of parents. It further determined the interaction effect of home environment and parental involvement on preschoolers’ readiness for primary school education. These were with a view to providing information on the factors that could influence readiness in preschoolers. The study adopted the descriptive research design. Parents of preschoolers in Osun State constituted the population for the study. The sample consisted of 300 parents from twelve schools. The samples were selected using multistage sampling procedure. Six Local Government Areas were selected from the three Senatorial Districts in Osun State using simple random sampling technique. From each Local Government, two private schools were selected using simple random sampling technique. From each of the 12 nursery schools, 25 parents were selected using purposive sampling technique. An instrument titled: Questionnaire on Home Environment, Parental Involvement and Preschoolers’ Readiness (QHEPIPR) was used to elicit information from the respondents. Percentages, frequency counts, t-test and ANOVA were employed to analyse the data. The results of the study showed that high percentage (71%) of preschoolers have homes that stimulate them for education by provision of educational materials, conducive reading atmosphere, good habits, monitored hours of television viewing, learning something new daily, deliberate conversations daily, planned time-out with the children, and punishment for misbehaviours. 14.0%, 70%, and 16% of the respondents have low, moderate and high level of parental involvement in preschoolers’ education. Also, the results showed that the home environment and parental involvement would significantly determine preschoolers’ readiness for primary school education (N=300, t=-59.996, p < 0.05) and (N=300,t = 21.483, p < 0.05) respectively while the interaction effect of home environment and parental involvement would also significantly determine preschoolers’ readiness for primary school education (N=300,F = 689.479, p = 0.000).The study concluded that home environment and parental involvement significantly determined preschoolers’ readiness for primary school education.

Three research questions were asked and answered, and three research hypotheses were tested and verified. Among others, the results showed that Social Studies teachers possessed only fair knowledge of Playway method. They equally possessed very high level of competence in the use of playway method. However, their gender has no significant influence on their competences. The study recommended among others, that teachers should be very fast and knowledgeable in the use of playway method of teaching which could be enhanced through self effort, seminars, symposia, workshop and in-service training to mention but a few.

It also identified the causes of violent behaviour among teenagers and highlighted the methods of resolving violent behaviour among teenagers. This was with a view of curbing violent behaviour among teenagers. The study adopted survey design. The population for this study consisted of teachers in Junior Secondary Schools in the state. A total of 115 teachers were purposively selected in Osun State Junior Secondary Schools. All the selected teachers were Social Studies teachers. The questionnaire titled i°Teachersi¯ Perception of Home Factors Contributing to Violent Behaviour among Teenagersi± (TPHFCVB) was developed by the investigators to elicit information from the respondents and their responses were subsequently analysed with the use of Frequency Distribution Tables, Percentages and Factor Analysis. Results showed that 6 principal components explained nearly 73% of the variability in the original 21 variables. Also the results revealed that there were six home factors contributing to violent behaviour among teenagers which were: single parenting, over confidence, poor home, over protection and dependency on family, poor relationship between parents and children and coming from wealthy home. However, it was shown that 3 principal components explained nearly 70% of the variability in the original 11 variables. The first component highly correlated with being victims of physical abuse, exposure to violent films and increased stress and conflicts. The results further revealed that 7 variables had very high values that were very close to 1. This proved that all these variables were good methods of resolving violent behaviour among teenagers. The study concluded and inferred that there were several home and generic factors contributing to violent behaviour among teenagers in Osun State. However, organizing sex education and parenting programmes by the school couple with monitoring the type of films children watch can go a long way in suppressing violent tendency among teenagers.

Enhancing quality assurance through teachers' effectiveness

Although each of these characteristics may contribute to teacher’s success, they are not the substance of effective teaching. A proper conceptualization of teaching and teacher’s effectiveness as a yardstick for quality assurance is necessary for a better understanding of what makes a teacher to be effective. It is believed that observational techniques as a strategy could go a long way in making teacher to be effective. This explains why this paper examined how to enhance quality assurance through teacher’s effectiveness. To achieve this, one hundred primary school teachers were personally observed in their classes for a period of 30 minutes each. The instrument employed was tagged classroom interaction sheet (CIS) which consisted of seven categories (A ‐ G) .Two research hypotheses were postulated and t-test and ANOVA statistical analyses were employed. The results indicated variance in the behavioural categories observed. The observational techniques as a means of enhancing quality assurance therefore are advocated for further studies.
