The Healthcare and Life Sciences Ecosystem delegation concluded its strategic visit to the United States as part of its efforts to strengthen international collaboration and reinforce Abu Dhabi's position as a global destination for innovation in healthcare and life sciences. The visit included meetings with leading research and healthcare institutions, biotechnology companies, and participation in the Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO 2026) International Convention to explore opportunities for collaboration in genomics, artificial intelligence, advanced therapies, precision medicine, and longevity. The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi is proud to announce the publication of a scientific milestone in The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), one of the world’s most prestigious peer-reviewed medical journals, highlighting Abu Dhabi’s pioneering experience in implementing an expanded premarital genetic screening programme. The publication outlines the design and implementation of the programme under the Emirati Genome Programme, demonstrating Abu Dhabi’s leadership in translating population-scale genomics into preventive healthcare and empowering individuals and families to make informed health decisions. During its pilot phase, the programme screened 1,094 couples across 22 clinics for genes associated with more than 840 autosomal recessive genetic conditions. It also identified couples at increased genetic risk and referred them for genetic counselling, supporting early prevention and informed reproductive planning. The programme’s success led to its integration into Abu Dhabi’s mandatory premarital screening requirements before being adopted nationwide, reflecting Abu Dhabi’s commitment to advancing a healthcare model centred on prevention, precision medicine, and better population health. This milestone further reinforces Abu Dhabi’s position as a global leader in life sciences and healthcare innovation, reflecting its vision of translating scientific evidence into impactful health policies that improve lives and build healthier communities.
