The functions of medical teachers extend far beyond the mere imparting of theoretical, stereotype bookish concepts or developing the routine protocol of clinical skills. Their duties include the framing of personal and professional growth among medical students, while developing among them, a sense of responsibility for themselves and the community and instilling within the medical learners, the requisite ethical standards for fulfilling the Hippocrates Oath of physicians. Methodologie Il s’agit d’une etude retrospective descriptive menee a l’institut de nutrition de Tunis incluant 32 patients DT2 avec NAFLD diagnostique par echographie abdominale, avec calcul du score FIB4. Un score de FIB4 > = 2,67 a une valeur predictive positive a 65 % d’avoir une fibrose. Un FIB4 > = 1,3 necessite un controle ulterieur. Resultats L’âge moyen des patients etait de 54,75 ± 10,24 ans avec une nette predominance feminine 81,3 %, l’hemoglobine glyquee HB1AC moyenne etait de 9. 2 % ± 2,2 %, un mauvais controle glycemique a ete note chez 72,4 % des patients. Presque la moitie des patients avaient une microangiopathie dominee par la nephropathie diabetique 53,1 %, La retinopathie et la neuropathie diabetique etaient notees respectivement dans 25 % et 9,4 %, 25 % avaient une macroangiopathie. L’analyse de bio-marqueurs de fibrose hepatique par le score Fib4 objectivait que 21,9 % des patients avaient un score FIB4 > = 1,3 et 12. 5 % avaient un score > = 2,67. Conclusion La steatose hepatique non alcoolique NAFLD et le diabete de type 2 DT2 representent deux entites hautement integrees avec une large interaction. La coexistence DT2 et NAFLD, d’une part altere le controle glycemique et augmente le risque de complications liees au DT2 et d’autre part augmente le risque de progression vers la fibrose hepatique.

In this study the plasma lipid profile and prolactin on first presentation are compared with the same analysis in patients benign breast disease. When matched for menopausal status, the plasma concentration of total lipids, phospholipids, triglycerides, cholesterol, B-lipoproteins and free fatty acids were higher in patients with cancer than in those with benign disease. Patients with duct papilloma had plasma concentrations of total lipids, and total cholesterol that were higher than those of patients with other benign disease not significantly different from those of the cancer patients. In contrast, the concentration of triglycerides, and free fatty acids were lower than in cancer patients and similar to those in patients with other non-cancerous breast disease. It is suggested that these results support the view that lipids are associated with the development of breast cancer. This may be by aiding the retention in the body of carcinogen. It is also possible that the blood lipid profile is secondary to hormon changes which predispose certain women to develop breast cancer. The mean concentration of prolactin was higher in individuals with cancer than in those with benign disease patients. In both groups prolactin levels were higher in pre-than in postmenopausal, patients. In cancer, but not in non-cancer patients, prolactin was positively correlated with total plasma lipid concentration after, but not before, the menopause. These relationships are discussed in relation to a possible link between prolactin, blood lipids and aetiology of breast cancer. Human breast cancer is probably of multifactorial aetiology, and the present findings would be in agreement with some involvement of dietary fat. Immediately after surgery in the cancer patients there was a fall in the plasma concentration of total lipids, phospholipids, cholesterol B-lipoproteins. During the same period there was a rise in the concentration of free fatty acids and HDL-cholesterol. Total lipids, phospholipids and triglycerides had regained their preoperative values by 28 days. The orthopaedic surgery study was undertaken to assess the metabolic response to trauma in patients having either emergency surgery or elective surgery for femoral neck fractures. This study also provided data for comparison with that obtained in the breast cancer patient in order to make it possible to identify changes which are more likey to be of general occurrence, rather than being limited to occurring after mastectomy. Twenty-seven elderly patients who had undergone surgery to treat, a fractured neck of femur were included in the study. Blood samples were taken 48 hours, 7 days and 14 days postoperatively. A preoperative baseline sample was obtained in the elective surgery group. Analysis of the plasma samples revealed a significant fall in the total lipids, total cholesterol and triglycerides in the immediate postoperative period in the elective surgery group. However, the concentration of HDL-cholesterol rose significantly during the same period. In the emergency group the HDL-cholesterol fell on the seventh day, but regained its pre-operative value by the second week. The downward trend in total lipids, total cholesterol, and triglycerides, in the immediate post-operative period, may conceal a high plasma lipid concentration prior to injury, so that the patient may not be recognized as being hyperlipidaemic due to the lowering effect of the trauma. The marked fall in the concentration of cholesterol was associated with trauma regardless of the pathological state of the patients.

The methods included an analysis of the literature, distillation of experience from the recently Jazan Health Need Assessment Survey, and WHO reports. The most important perceived health problems in Jazan region are shortage of health care providers, increased prevalence of communicable diseases and poor environmental health. The academic institutions, Ministry of Health and other health care institutions need to work together to look for innovative approaches, especially to increase the awareness of the society on public health issues, and give more support to increase national and regional funding for community based studies.The findings of the assessment of the health needs of Jazan presented in this review could be utilized as a baseline and reference information for policy formulation, subsequent planning and cost effective intervention programs. It could also be utilized for the curriculum development or review for a community oriented medical schools.

This paper uses a public health approach to examine briefly: (a) the progress of universal salt i... more This paper uses a public health approach to examine briefly: (a) the progress of universal salt iodisa tion (USI) in Sudan; (b) the roles of the main actors involved; and (c) the main issues around accelerating USI. The literature, especially that coming from the UN agencies, is analysed and experiences from the recently revitalised USI programme, and related relevant meetings, are distilled. In Sudan the prevalence of goitre is 22 per cent. It is assumed that productivity among the people affected is reduced by 5-25 per cent. Little apparent progress has been made with USI. The Govern ment of Sudan, UN multilateral agencies, international consultative groups, bilateral agencies, global and national nongovernmental organisations and, increasingly, the private sector must work together to find innovative approaches to increase awareness of the broader social, public health and nutritional contexts, and to advocate for increased national and international funding.

The purpose of this study was to determine the sero-prevalence of brucellosis in Jazan Province, Saudi Arabia and assess the possible risk factors. Methods: An observational cross-sectional study was conducted in three geographical areas of Jazan Province, Saudi Arabia. The study sample included 400 participants from randomly selected primary health care centres. A standardised questionnaire was used to collect information on demographics and risk factors for brucellosis. A 5 ml blood sample was collected from each study participant. The SPSS statistical program was utilised for data analysis.

Motivational Factors to Receive the COVID-19 Vaccine in the United Arab Emirates: A Cross-Sectional Study

Nevertheless, the motivations of residents in the UAE to receive the COVID-19 vaccine are varied. In this study with 426 vaccinated participants, 55% expressed health motivations to receive the vaccine, whereas 45% expressed non-health motivations. Nationality was a predictive factor in motivation, as expatriates from South Asian countries expressed the lowest motivation to get the vaccine on the basis of intrinsic health reasons, followed by expatriates from Arab countries, Emiratis, and expatriates from the rest of the world. The same nationality pattern was observed in vaccine readiness and vaccine knowledge. Both of these variables had a correlation with intrinsic health motivation in receiving the vaccine. No significant difference across nationalities was observed regarding vaccine conspiracy beliefs, and this variable only had a weak negative correlation with motivations to receive the vaccine.

The architecture of retinal blood vessels not only imparts a distinctive morphological imprint to subjects, but also determines micro-circulatory adequacy. This book presents an extensive comparison of retinal vascular architecture in Healthy, Diabetic and Hypertensive fundus along objective parameters like distance, direction, branching and tortuosity. It exhibits elaborate use of fundus imaging and angiography to quantify morphological profiles of retinal vasculature and the ultra-structural changes that govern the development and progress of retinopathy. The research presented herein; reveals for the first time, the evidence of papillary trunk arterial angles and prime arterial bifurcation distances influencing the adequacy of microcirculation in the human retina.

Recently the quality of sleep among various segments of populations has become a focus of continu... more Recently the quality of sleep among various segments of populations has become a focus of continuous research and investigations, medical students as specialized group among students are generally suffering from poor quality of sleep. The objective of the current study was to determine the prevalence and factors associated with poor sleep quality among medical students at Jazanuniversity.Across sectional survey conducted amongstudents of faculty of medicine, JazanUniversity. The study targeted random sample of 400students. Self-administeredquestionnaire was used for data collection. Sleep perception was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) for assessing sleep quality. SPSS software program was utilized for data analysis. The study revealed that 35.6% of students reported good sleep quality while the students with poor sleep quality were 64.4% with confidence interval (59 -69%). The mean of number of hours slept each night by males were 5.15 compared with 4.77 for females (P-value=0.040). Regarding the subjective sleep quality the majority of the students 75.2% reported good sleep quality, while those with of poor sleep quality were only 24.8% of them. Income and gender were the main factors associated significantly with sleep quality (P. Value = 0.015 and 0.020 respectively). The result of our study suggested a high prevalence of a poor sleep quality among medical students ofJazanUniversityaccordingtoPSQI. Subjective sleep quality on the other hand showed that students think that they had a good sleep quality. This result calls for more research about sleep quality among medical students. Regulating the activities and behaviors to allow enough time to sleep can improve the quality of sleep among university students.

Viral hepatitis during pregnancy is associated with high risk of maternal complications. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of HBV infection in pregnant women, and to find out its associated risk factors in Jazan region south KSA. Patients &amp; Methods: A random sample of 537 pregnant females who attended Jazan general hospital and randomly selected primary health care centers in Jazan region -before 38 weeks of gestation -constituted the target population of the present study. All women were screened for HBsAgd by using HBsAg Rapid Test Device (ACON). Results: The overall prevalence of HBV virus among the women was found to be 4.1% (95% CI: 2.7 -6.1). The prevalence of HBV according to age showed that women less than 20 years are free of HBV, whereas for other age groups HBV prevalence is found to increase with increase in age. Regarding the associated risk factors, women with history of hospitalization, and jaundices showed a significant association with anti-HBV seropositive. Dental histories, blood transfusion and history of surgery did not prove significant association with HBV. Conclusion: Prevalence of Hepatitis B virus infection in pregnant ladies was 4.1%. Past history of hospitalization and jaundices are important risk factors for transmission of infection. The study suggests expansion of the Hepatitis B vaccination program to reduce the risk of HBV among pregnant women.

This study aimed to assess car-driving behaviors and attitudes and to measure the changes in the ... more This study aimed to assess car-driving behaviors and attitudes and to measure the changes in the knowledge and behavioral practices associated with road safety measures of 1333 randomly selected young-adult participants (aged 18–24 years) from Jazan University in Gizan city, Saudi Arabia. Data were collected using cross-sectional survey and quasi experimental pre- and post-evaluation educational intervention study including structured questionnaire and take-home educational material. Results revealed that low compliance with the safety index significantly increased the risk of traffic injuries by 20% [OR = 0.80, 95% CI = (0.59–1.01)]. Whereas the medium category of the safety compliance index is significantly associated with an increasing number of injuries by 6% [OR = 0.94, 95% CI = (0.61–1.52)]. In contrast, both high and medium categories of risk behavior index increased the risk of traffic injuries [OR = 1.08, 95% CI = (0.82–1.43); OR = 0.80, 95% CI = (0.57–1.10), respectively]....

Two hundred and fifty women (50 from each PHCC) who have children less than 2-years of age who visited the selected PHCCs during the study period were selected by systematic random sampling. Data was collected via a questionnaire which contained sociodemographic characteristics of the mother and their children and mothers' practices during pregnancy, lactation and the care of their children. Approximately 73% of the mothers breast fed their children initially but only 37.6% are currently breast feeding their children.
