Confusing Google Workspace privacy change will re-enable tracking for users

Enough of this crap. I will be moving my legacy gSuite account to Microsoft come May. Can't move the other paid accounts, though. Too bad.

Google relents: Legacy G Suite users will be able to migrate to free accounts

I actually trust Microsoft now more than Google (my 90's self hates me!). I am a paying customer of both companies, but still get the distinct impression of being Google's product. "Remember when we promised you X? Tough nuts, sweetie."

Researchers find a chemical that makes locusts swarm

Great research. This would put an end to one of the Plagues of Egypt! On the other hand, this chemical could be used to create swarms in enemies' crops. Terrifying.

Firefly outlines plans to expand beyond small-satellite launch

Eric, can you write "Space startup Firefly" in the title instead of just "Firefly"? My heart skipped a beat. Thank you for your coverage!

Thanks, Jon, for this article. But.... no puns? Beth could help you out here.

Oracle patches 5 major holes in PeopleSoft apps similar to HeartBleed

Interesting error. Everybody involved must be doing a git blame and hoping their name is not linked to that line. Though things like this should be caught in Code Reviews.

Amid “muffled sobs,” ex-prosecutor pleads guilty to illegal wiretapping

This sounds like a subplot of The Wire, with Pearlman wiretapping McNulty's phone in season 1.

Plans for a 24-hour solar thermal plant earn environmental approval in Chile

Very cool. As Tucu mentions, the price per MW is very low. This shoots down the two main objections to renewable energies: cost and reliablity. As an aside, this site is very close to where my grandparents arrived from China about 100 years ago, and close to where some relatives live nowadays...

Is this the longest-lasting phone of the year?

One of the mysteries of modern technology is why phone makers won't pack beefier batteries with their phones. Make the damn things less thin if you have to! Or at least offer your customers a choice. I know I would choose a bit of bulk if that affords me longer battery life. --B

Creative Control explores the dark side of augmented reality—with humor

That's putting it mildly. The Xmas special left my mind in need of a bath. --B

Netflix finishes its massive migration to the Amazon cloud

According to their latest 10-q filing, IT expenses for the third quarter of 2015 were 172 million dollars, up from 121 in 2014. Not very expensive for the amount of infrastructure and bandwidth they consume. --B

Netflix finishes its massive migration to the Amazon cloud

Random thoughts: From a strategic standpoint, it must be scary to have your infrastructure managed by a competitor. Though they are AWS's biggest customer, so I guess their fates are intertwined. Chaos Monkey, Chaos Gorilla, Chaos Kong, Armaggedon Monkey... they need a Galactus Monkey, that...

Adblock Plus blocked from attending online ad industry’s big annual conference

Advertisers should LOVE AdBlock. It weeds out visitors that will never ever click on their ads or purchase their products because of them. It saves them the trouble of paying for advertising that will have no effect, thus improving its effectiveness. Websites, on the other hand, should really...

Netflix now everywhere except North Korea, China, Syria, Crimea

I've been told *wink wink* that you can change the available content simply by switching DNS servers. No VPN needed. So if your DNS server is in the US, you will get US content. DNS servers in England will bring you content available in England, etc. Google "netflix change dns" for more...

Annalee, welcome to Ars! Been a fan of your work at io9.com for a long time. Sad you left io9.com, but glad you left for another of my favorite sites. --B

AT&T’s “Extreme Willingness to Help” is key to NSA Internet surveillance

This arrangement must have given at&t some good will with the government - useful to get more convenient legislation. At the expense of their customers, of course.
