Explain it like I’m 5: Why is everyone on speakerphone in public?

The phone has a proximity sensor to turn off the touch screen. "Capacitive touch screens are prone to phantom presses from contact or near-contact with the cheek or ear and sweat can build up over the course of a conversation."

Password managers’ promise that they can’t see your vaults isn’t always true

I just use Keepass and sneaker net. I have a token generator for the bank though I really don't know if that is foolproof tech. I don't get this automatic syncing. You are not supposed to be changing your passwords periodically. Just sync manually.

Ancient Mars was warm and wet, not cold and icy

What? We learned the effects are terrible. Affecting eyesight already is bad enough. (Spaceflight-Associated Neuro-Ocular Syndrome) Then there is the bone loss. Maybe I should have stated "what new are we learning with the ISS."

Ancient Mars was warm and wet, not cold and icy

I "get" the valley of Mars exploration. However today's ARS also covered the ISS and I never understood th value of that project. We know the effect of low gravity and it isn't good.

SpaceX gets FCC permission to launch another 7,500 Starlink satellites

https://www.iflscience.com/orbital-house-of-cards-one-solar-storm-and-28-days-could-end-in-disaster-for-earth-and-its-satellites-81917 "By 2024, there were over 14,000 satellites in orbit around the Earth. Megaconstellations, like SpaceX's Starlink, make up the bulk of this number, with Elon...

SpaceX gets FCC permission to launch another 7,500 Starlink satellites

    Could it be campaign contributions?

There’s a big shake-up near the top of our annual US launch company rankings

Yeah it is bloated but building new silos apparently wasn't in the budget for this program. So the missiles aren't totally to blame. Most arms control experts say the land based element of the triad should be elimited. They need to be launched in a hurry before the supposed incoming missiles...

Trump revives unpopular Ted Cruz plan to punish states that impose AI laws

He literally asked for Georgia to find votes, he led an insurrection, yet won the popular vote. Barely but still.

The EU made Apple adopt new Wi-Fi standards, and now Android can support AirDrop

Just so you know, money isn't the reason people chose Android. Rather it is freedom.

Teen haunted by fake nudes sues to kill nudify app, block Telegram bots

Basically a Streisand effect. And a no win situation. There is a bit of irony here in that I never heard of ClothOff until this article was posted. I suppose I could have Googled to find it but I don't get fake nudes. At one time I considered getting a Telegram account since there is a lot...

Starlink’s ambitious mobile plan could be trouble for Apple, AT&T, and Verizon

It all comes down to reliability as far as I am concerned. I am not trying to stream to YouTube. I need a message to go out with 100% reliability. The thing with connectivity is the terrestrial cellular vendors have become pretty aggressive with expanding coverage. I find myself using my phone...

Starlink’s ambitious mobile plan could be trouble for Apple, AT&T, and Verizon

It is probably dumb of me to reply to a down voted post, but I am on Garmin Iridium for $11 a month. It has never failed me. I was originally a Spot customer which used Global Star. One remote trip the damn service didn't work. Back then GlobalStar was a one-way system. I dumped the service...

“China keeps the algorithm”: Critics attack Trump’s TikTok deal

For five days I have heard social media is bad. We need to touch grass. Did something change?

Perplexity offers more than twice its total valuation to buy Chrome from Google

https://github.com/ungoogled-software/ungoogled-chromium So is when this project removes the hidden value of the "free" browser? I mean besides the default search engine.

iPadOS 26 preview: The rare software update that makes (most) old hardware feel new

I read PDFs on mine. If the text doesn't flow, you need a big high res screen. Even more so with Greek symbols. Period end of story. Why the Android tablet people never figured that out is beyond me. Andrew listed the only things that remotely interested me, mostly the file system. "There are...

After a week, Trump Mobile drops claim that Trump phone is “made in the USA”

My point is most of this work is robotic. It can and is done on shore, but not in Chinese volume. It is just a matter of scale. Every part of the chain is done domestically. I can't speak for the passive components being built domestically.

After a week, Trump Mobile drops claim that Trump phone is “made in the USA”

Much of the smartphone construction chain could be done in the US. Working backwards, the PCB can be populated with pick and place machines. (Get out your ear plugs.) The PCBs can be made in the US. Chip packaging is woefully insufficient in the US. It is done in Asia and especially the ROK...

Europe tries to force age verification onto Pornhub and other adult sites

My unpaid informant, Bill Maher, says much of the porn looks like rape. That could be harmful. I suppose a rating system could be implemented but if the rape-like sex requires verification, we are back to the same problem.
