We're really doing the speedrun to Idiocracy, aren't we?
Idiocracy seems optimistic; announcing a government crackdown on political opponents using trumped-up [sic] "threats to domestic security" suggests Germany circa 1938 is more likely...We're really doing the speedrun to Idiocracy, aren't we?
Of course they're not, but they are based on the fascist playbook. Vilify your opponents and accuse them of the crimes you want to commit (or already have) to confuse the public and invigorate your base. We have seen this song and dance in authoritarian governments time and time again. From our research on extremism, it’s clear that the president’s and Miller’s assertions about political violence from the left are not based on actual facts.
By contrast, U.S. law bars the government from labeling domestic political organizations as terrorist entities because of First Amendment free speech protections.
This is demonstrably not true. The FBI and DHS do not investigate people in the U.S. for constitutionally protected speech, activism, or ideological beliefs.
It may not directly pertain to science or tech, but it is absolutely important to get this information out there. America needs to have some real conversations, and Ars is part of that (we all are.)Without criticizing the content of the article, which is very good, I'd just like to know why this is on Ars. Not sure how it relates to science or technology.
I am also Canadian and this is not shocking in the slightest. If you've been paying attention to US news in the past 20 years you should have seen this coming. And frankly give it a few years and expect to see more of it here at home too. Please don't spear me, but it seems weird to this Canadian that it's gotten to the point down there where there's even debates on which kind of violence is better or worse, and not that there's violence in the first place.

Wayback Machine to the rescue https://web.archive.org/web/20250912005717/https://www.ojp.gov/pdffiles1/nij/306123.pdfTrump's regime deleted references on the national web site to a study that showed this.... it goes against their narrative so it had to go.
Couple points to make here. Please don't spear me, but it seems weird to this Canadian that it's gotten to the point down there where there's even debates on which kind of violence is better or worse, and not that there's violence in the first place.
But he’ll do it anyway because no-one is stopping him.
He just declared Antifa to be a ‘major terrorist organisation’. So get used to even more people being arrested, intimidated and harassed.

Yup.Since Antifa isn't an actual organized anything, they're basically writing a blank check to treat anyone they deem "Antifa" as extra-judicial.
Fixed your sub headline for you.President Trump's assertionsabout political violenceignore the facts.
Let's not give them any more ideas.Just hypothetically, can anyone think of anything more this administration could have even done to use Charlie Kirks death as an authoritarian power grab?
Martial law to suppress the protests when Kirk is given national honors? /sJust hypothetically, can anyone think of anything more this administration could have even done to use Charlie Kirks death as an authoritarian power grab?
As a STEM major, I make fun of the social sciences, but they are still sciences. Studying human behavior is a science. It may not directly pertain to science or tech, but it is absolutely important to get this information out there. America needs to have some real conversations, and Ars is part of that (we all are.)
And besides, the bigger, more generalized news sources are too busy firing people for displeasing the regime.
If you RTFA you will notice many references to studies, academics, databases, and similar accoutrements of the scientific endeavor, in this case as applied to the scientific study of violent extremism. Does that clear it up for you?Seriously. Why is this on Ars?

Canceling a TV show because the host said that the current administration is using this assassination for an authoritarian power grab?Just hypothetically, can anyone think of anything more this administration could have even done to use Charlie Kirks death as an authoritarian power grab?
McVeigh's (lack of) party association has nothing on the planet earth to do with anything. His views are what made him right-wing, not his party affiliation. Next you're going to tell me that North Korea is a democracy because their name is "Democratic People's Republic of Korea"Kimmel gets pulled from the air for such comments and Ars pushes more left leaning assumptions. A quick Grok search would have yielded Timothy McVeigh was not associated with either party. He was briefly with the KKK, which was born in the aftermath of civil war in the democratic south. He was also part of the Aryan Nation. Born from Germany during WW2, under the "National Socialist German Workers' Party". Although called another alt right wing, last time I checked, all the socialist where in the left side party. Bernie Sanders seems to be the lead example.
To whomever decided to run this article though, hats off, balls of steel.
