Handling/Fingering

Handling/fingering typically refers to the inability to manipulate items with the hands and/or fingers. Accommodation ideas usually involve providing equipment and workstation supports.

• Implement more ergonomic workstation designs such as articulating keyboard trays, book holders, forearm supports, grip aids, page turners, or writing aids to increase the amount of time tasks requiring fine motor dexterity can be performed
• Provide alternative keyboards, expanded keyboards, alternative mice, or speech recognition software to help enable computer access
• Provide auto-dialers, gooseneck or other telephone holders, hands-free telephones, headsets, or speech recognition integration to help enable telephone access
• Provide training on general ergonomic principles to help ensure a proper workstation setup and to help avoid awkward hand postures
• Allow periodic rest breaks throughout the workday to allow stretching and changing positions and to help break up prolonged fine motor tasks
• Allow a self-paced workload via job restructuring to reduce the amount of time spent working solely on tasks that require fine motor dexterity
