Even in the Smurfs' village, not everything is as it seems. Behind fake promises and deceptive opportunities can be a much darker reality. Across the world, traffickers lure people with fake job offers, trap them in scam operations, and force them to carry out online fraud through violence, threats and coercion. The Smurfs managed to escape Gargamel's trap. Sadly, many victims of human trafficking cannot. A fake job offer can become a trafficking trap. Criminal networks lure people with promises of legitimate work. Instead, many are trafficked into scam operations, where they are stripped of their freedom and forced to carry out online fraud under threats, violence, debt and fear. Preventing this crime requires stronger oversight of recruitment agencies, safe labour migration pathways and greater awareness of deceptive recruitment practices. Every scam starts with a message. Sometimes, the person sending the message was forced to send it. Organized criminal groups are trafficking people for forced criminality, victimizing people on both sides of the scam. #EndHumanTrafficking
