China's Green Methanol Industry is racing ahead 🇨🇳🌱⚗️🏎️
In recent years, I've been closely watching the development of Green Methanol🌱⚗️ projects. A couple of years ago, it looked like it would become a big thing in Europe🇪🇺. In light of the whole "Hydrogen" thing, many recognized that Hydrogen derivatives like Ammonia and Methanol are often more valuable than direct uses of Hydrogen💧
Many expect that Methanol is the future clean fuel for shipping🚢⛽, as well as the most promising feedstock for sustainable aviation fuels✈️ and fossil-free plastics🧴
In 2023, something happened in China🇨🇳. Suddenly, announcements for Green Methanol production plants started appearing. They had one thing in common: they were huge💪. 500,000 tons here, a million tons there🏭🏭🏭🏭🏭
I watched it with interest. Since then, I asked myself and others whether this is real. Announcing things is cheap; building things matters🏗️
In 2025, it became clear that it is real. While we haven't seen the mega-projects yet, four industrial-scale Green Methanol plants are now operational in China. In Europe? One (European Energy / Kasso PtX in Denmark🇩🇰)
In 2024, A.P. Moller Holding - they own the majority of A.P. Moller - Maersk🚢 - created the startup Vioneo, with plans for a Methanol-based fossil-free plastics plant in Antwerp, Belgium🇧🇪. In 2026, Vioneo changed its plans. It now wants to build "in China near green methanol supply". Europe's🇪🇺 failure to scale Green Methanol production leads to a compounding failure to attract one of the most promising projects for a fossil-free future chemical industry🌱⚗️🏭
It all feels like what played out in the Solar☀️ industry is happening again. China invests early and big. You can watch it live and in real-time. It's not subtle or secret, yet barely anyone outside the small "Green Methanol Bubble" talks about it.
