Small Business Week is back from 17-21 August, right around SA. It's a special opportunity to acknowledge the small businesses of PAE and the important part they play in our economy and our communities. There are more than 3,400 small businesses with 1–19 staff based in the City of PAE, 700 of them having opened here since 2019. We love our small businesses, each one contributing to making PAE a dynamic place to live and work. We want to see our small businesses supported, growing and thriving. To celebrate and welcome small business owners, we're hosting a FREE business event on the topic "Smarter Decision, Stronger Business" on Tuesday 18 August at Sunnybrae Estate Function Centre in Regency Park. We're proud to support community-led initiatives that protect and enhance our natural environment, creating a greener, healthier and more sustainable future for everyone. The PAE community are a huge part of helping us reach our 2050 tree canopy gaol of 35% across the City of PAE. Recently, more than 80 volunteers rolled up their sleeves to help green our city and support local biodiversity. Together, an incredible 2,100 seedlings were planted in record time! The planting took place at Down Drive along Dry Creek in Valley View as part of National Tree Day, with The Friends of Dry Creek Trail leading the project in partnership with PAE. Native grasses and small shrubs were planted along the shared-use path to help enhance the native grassland and provide important habitat for local wildlife, including native butterflies. A special thank you to the Friends of Dry Creek Trail, along with all the volunteers who helped including those from Hillcrest and Golden Grove Scout Groups, Prescott Primary Northern, and the Shah Satnam Ji Green S Welfare Committee for their contribution.

When Horizon Trading Cards opened in Blair Athol last October, Army veteran Ben wanted to create a space where people could connect. While the business specialises in trading card games and collectibles, its impact extends beyond retail. Through weekly events, Horizon Trading Cards has built an inclusive community where people can make friends, build confidence and feel a sense of belonging. Drawing on his own experiences, Ben is passionate about creating a welcoming environment where everyone feels accepted. "Many people are struggling, but they're often very good at hiding it," he said. "Sometimes the biggest difference you can make to someone's wellbeing is giving them a place where they feel accepted." The regular gaming events bring together people of all ages and experience levels, with experienced players helping newcomers learn the ropes and become part of the community. "It's great to see people introducing new players to their friendship groups and supporting each other outside the games themselves," Ben said. As a new small business owner, Ben said support from PAE's Economic Development team has helped him establish the business and connect with the broader local community. Through business advice, networking opportunities and the PAE Business Fundamentals Program, he has been able to access guidance and support. "Having people willing to answer questions and point you in the right direction has been incredibly valuable," he said. "Don't be afraid to ask for help. For generations, the historic Ketch Falie has been recognised for decades of service as a coastal trader and later as a tourist attraction. Yet one of the most important chapters in her history remains largely unknown – her wartime service and the role vessels like Falie played in supporting Australia during a critical period of World War II. That untold story inspired Historic Ketch Falie Chair David Stephens to apply for grant funding through the City of PAE grants program. This funding is helping bring Falie’s wartime contribution back into public awareness through a dedicated documentary project. This project is also about securing Falie’s future. While the vessel is not currently open to visitors, increasing public awareness helps build support for future preservation efforts, educational programs and heritage initiatives. It ensures Falie is remembered not just as an old vessel on a slipway, but as an important part of South Australia’s maritime story and Port Adelaide’s working heritage. It is also a testament to the passion and dedication of volunteers who continue to champion Falie’s legacy. From fundraising and research to events and community engagement, their efforts keep this historic vessel visible and relevant for future generations. We're joining forces to explore how artificial intelligence can help us deliver better outcomes for our community. Together with the City of Charles Sturt and City of Marion, we've signed a long-term strategic partnership with Adelaide-based digital transformation consultancy Bailey Abbott to responsibly identify and develop practical AI solutions that improve council services. Through this partnership, we'll invest in shared AI capability and reusable solutions that can deliver long-term efficiencies and value across local government. In the early stages of the partnership, we'll work together to identify and co-design practical AI use cases, develop AI roadmaps, pilot and test initiatives with staff, and support implementation to improve service delivery for our communities. This collaborative approach allows us to share knowledge, build capability and ensure AI is implemented responsibly, with a focus on delivering real benefits for our residents, businesses and visitors. This past weekend, as a part of the 50th anniversary of NAIDOC Week, Yitpi Yartapuultiku hosted a day of activities for local and broader community members to engage with Kaurna Culture. The day opened with a Welcome to Country with Aunty Susie and a Smoking Ceremony at the Cooking Fire Pit with Bryce Cawte followed by a suite of offerings including: ⭐Damper Making and Bush Medicine with Tarnda ⭐Weaving with Kahlia Power-Smith ⭐Yidaki (Didgeridoo) playing workshops with Otis Carter ⭐Cultural Tours with PAE Cultural Ranger Willis Daveson ⭐Stories with Kaurna Elders ⭐a kids play area provided by Kura Yerlo Inc ⭐an acoustic set by Katie Aspel Despite the weather, the community showed up to enjoy the day and participate in bespoke workshop experiences providing meaningful experiences for all. A big thanks to everyone who helped make the event a wonderful 50th anniversary celebration for the community.

It's a Grand-Slam win! Last week PAE won the Most Outstanding Council or Government Department at the Tennis SA Awards, recognising our support for tennis in SA. Working closely with Tennis SA on key initiatives designed to enhance grassroots tennis participation across PAE and encourage more people to play and enjoy the game, in announcing the award, the presenter stated: "With a strong and balanced approach to sporting infrastructure investment, governance, and community access, this council has set a high standard in delivering quality venues and meaningful opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy tennis." A clear and sustained commitment to supporting our tennis clubs, both on and off the court, through targeted governance support and strategic facility renewal initiatives, PAE is creating the conditions for clubs to focus on growing membership, increasing participation, and strengthening their long-term sustainability. We are proud of our ongoing commitment to collaborative and meaningful partnerships with teams like Tennis SA to drive participation outcomes that benefit the PAE community and the state.
