Every so often, a piece of internet slang jumps from niche online communities into the mainstream, and right now, one term that continues to gain traction is “looksmaxxing.” At first glance it sounds harmless — simply improving your appearance. But the phrase actually originated in incel forums, where it refers to the systematic optimisation of physical attractiveness, often tied to harmful ideas about identity, self-worth and social status. As language like this spreads across platforms like TikTok, it can begin appearing in school environments too. For school leaders and safeguarding teams, staying aware of emerging digital culture and terminology is critical. These words can sometimes signal exposure to online communities that promote unrealistic standards, toxic masculinity, or harmful peer dynamics. The good news? With the right visibility and technology for good, schools can spot early signals in digital behaviour and language — helping staff intervene earlier, open supportive conversations, and disrupt harmful narratives before they take root. The latest Common Sense Media brief on age assurance lands at a critical time for schools and families navigating online safety. As policymakers and platforms push for stronger age verification, the report underscores a key challenge: how do we better protect children from harmful content without creating new privacy, equity, or access concerns? For school leaders, this goes beyond policy debate. Age assurance directly impacts safeguarding, digital access, and parent trust. With children going online earlier than ever, and many encountering inappropriate content in primary years, stronger guardrails are clearly needed, but the detail on implementation matters. The brief outlines evolving approaches, from self-declaration to AI-based age estimation and device-level verification, each carrying trade-offs in accuracy, bias, and data protection. Age assurance can reduce exposure risk, but it is not a standalone solution. For schools, the focus must remain layered and strategic: building digital literacy so students understand platform rules and data use, maintaining visibility tools for early detection, and actively engaging parents as policies increasingly affect home devices. Age assurance is one piece of the puzzle.
