I've just returned from an eventful couple of days at #EDUtech_AU at the ICC in Sydney. As always, connecting and reconnecting with people was a highlight, some old friends, some new and some wonderful future opportunities to be experienced! Loved the plenary sessions and always find myself writing down little phrases that are meaningful to me. I was particularly taken by Andy Hargreaves definition of Ubuntu - 'we are rather than I am' and his quote by Archbishop Desmond Tutu 'A person with Ubuntu is open and available to others, affirming of others and does not feel threatened that others are able and good'. I resonated with his 'Teaching to Repair the world' through The Practice, The People and The World and eagerly await his new book. Also captivated by Jason Reynolds and his 'put gratitude into a book' and my favourite - 'Preaching to the choir, but even the choir has to go to choir practice!' Both of these speakers focusing on the power of connection. Loved seeing Harold from #LifeEd and reconnecting with Peta Hicks from Storybox Hub, Kate McGrath from Renaissance and Tenneille Langton from MTA. Being part of a ConnectEd panel - Technology intergration in Primary School with Lesley Gough, Grant Jones and Jennifer Suhr was a definite highlight as was presenting 'Once Upon a TalkTime: Unlocking the Power of Storytelling - how storytelling builds trust, thinking and communication with Ronnelle Sanders. Thanks for always supporting our work Stuart Ablitt and Caragh Rosevear - we appreciate you both. An opportunity to experience the magic of Vivid topped off a fun couple of days. Thanks for the invitation Elizabeth Paterson.

What an incredible couple of days in Sydney, attending EDUtech AU with my counterpart Joshua Brewer. So many conference highlights, but I will only touch on a few standout moments in this post. The trip was off to a wonderful start when I ran into Zoe Alice Williamson at breakfast before the conference had even begun. At the beginning of the conference, one of the keynote speakers, Andy Hargreaves, really got us all thinking about two of the current crises in education - absenteeism and teacher recruitment. One moment from Prof. Hargreaves' talk that really stuck with me was the observation that the opposite of absence was not attendance, but presence, as well as the idea of teaching as 'repair work.' Prof. Danny Liu's presentation challenged us to ponder, 'Is Education Asleep at the Wheel?' and his metaphor about taking the stairs vs. the escalator in education really struck a chord. What are we giving up without realising? In a presentation that was quite literally standing room only, Andrew Fuller encouraged the audience to explore cognitive science and how a better understanding of this can assist students and teachers. After numerous interactions online, it was delightful to meet fellow #MIE Expert, James Jenkins in person, and hear him talk about using AI to design interactive digital tools for the classroom - something I already put into action on Friday, creating a Russian Revolution timeline sorting activity. On Thursday, it was wonderful to hear two brilliant #ADEs speak, Mary McEvilly Butler and Laura Bain - two incredible, inspiring women who are really making a difference in education. I loved hearing from Mary about different ways that AI can be used to support teachers and students and was fascinated to listen to Laura share her school's forward-thinking ideas, with their urban campus. If this was not already an amazing list of highlights, I also got to meet a national celebrity, and childhood hero, Harold the Giraffe from Life Ed | Healthy Harold, have dinner with my beautiful sister Nicola Tauro and enjoy Sydney put on an amazing light show every evening as part of Vivid Festival Sydney.
Always great working with the NSW Department of Education to bring timely sessions to #EDUtechAU. Thank you Linda Lazenby and all the team for your support. It takes a village, that is for sure!

When presenting at #EDUtechAU last week I posed this question to the audience: 𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆 - 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱? 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘬𝘦𝘦𝘱? 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘭𝘦𝘵 𝘨𝘰 𝘰𝘧? 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘺𝘦𝘵 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘪𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘥? It is a tantalising question. One that I know many of us have sat around the staffroom debating over the years. How many times have we said, "If I was building a school from scratch..." As I embark on the Urban Campus Project for Immanuel Lutheran College, where we are reimagining Senior School in a new local CBD location, I would love to lean into the collective wisdom of my network. Many of you are friends I have made over the years, educational leaders I greatly admire and people who care about education. As Nelson Mandela said, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world" - so let's change the world! Teachers, industry experts, leaders, parents, students - how about a little collaborative brainstorm? Blank sheet of paper. What comes next? I'd love to hear from you. Please tag someone you know who likes to think big.
