The International Maritime Organization's Interim Guidelines on Training for Seafarers on Ships Using Ammonia as Fuel are another indication that ammonia is progressing from concept to commercial reality. In 2021, International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)'s "World Energy Transitions Outlook" highlighted ammonia as a key fuel for decarbonising shipping. The potential was clear, but much of the supporting ecosystem was still missing: infrastructure, bunkering, vessel designs and regulation. Five years later, that picture is changing. Europe has seen successful ship-to-ship ammonia bunkering in Rotterdam, Hamburg is developing ammonia import infrastructure, and Belgian-based EXMAR's vessel "Antwerpen" has completed its international ammonia-fuelled voyage. The new IMO guidelines are another important milestone. They outline the competencies expected of seafarers serving on ammonia-fuelled ships, covering topics such as ammonia's properties and hazards, safe operations, emergency response and the use of protective equipment. In doing so, they provide the foundation for consistent training as more ammonia-fuelled vessels enter service. This is another piece of the energy transition puzzle. Training standards are being developed alongside technology and infrastructure, demonstrating that ammonia is no longer just a future concept but a fuel the maritime industry is actively preparing to use. In 2021, this was a projection. In 2026, it is becoming reality. 🚢 𝗔 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗮 𝗶𝗻 𝗛𝗮𝗺𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗴'𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 Another major European port is setting the stage for an ammonia-fuelled future. Following the government's approval of MB Energy's ammonia import terminal in Hamburg back in April, the energy company has now developed, together with the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) Anstalt öffentlichen Rechts, a comprehensive risk assessment and safety strategy for ship-to-ship ammonia bunkering. While the import terminal is planned for construction starting in 2029, this latest milestone ensures the Port of Hamburg is becoming, in its own words, "bunker ready" for ammonia. By establishing the safety framework well ahead of infrastructure deployment, Hamburg is laying the groundwork for the reliable and secure adoption of ammonia as a marine fuel and reinforcing its position at the forefront of the maritime energy transition. Congratulations to the Hamburg Port Authority, MB Energy, and all stakeholders involved in advancing ammonia's role in the future of sustainable shipping. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗨 𝗘𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 (𝗘𝗧𝗦) 𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝟭𝟳 𝗝𝘂𝗹𝘆. For Europe's ammonia sector, this is an opportunity to ensure that the ETS remains fit for purpose in a rapidly evolving industrial landscape. 🇪🇺 Since 2005, the ETS has been the European Union's cornerstone instrument for reducing greenhouse gas emissions across industry, power generation, aviation and maritime transport. Today, however, the system must respond to new realities: growing geopolitical uncertainty and increasing pressure on Europe's industrial competitiveness. #Ammonia sits at the intersection of these challenges. As a critical chemical for Europe's economy, ammonia underpins: 🔹 Food security through the production of mineral nitrogen fertilisers essential for agricultural productivity. 🔹Industrial resilience as a key feedstock for pharmaceuticals, plastics, resins, explosives and refrigerants. 🔹 Energy transition objectives through its emerging role as a hydrogen carrier and sustainable maritime fuel. The ETS 2026 Review must recognise these strategic functions and create the conditions for ammonia to continue contributing to Europe's decarbonisation objectives. In our latest position paper, we outline the key measures required to ensure the ETS framework adequately reflects the realities of ammonia production and use. Our recommendations address both stationary installations and maritime applications, ensuring the framework reflects ammonia’s strategic importance. 📃 Read the full position paper here: https://lnkd.in/eDTuMzVd The policy choices made in this review will shape the trajectory of one of Europe's most strategic molecules for years to come. #ETS #EmissionsTradingSystem #CleanAmmonia #Decarbonisation #Industry #Policy

🚢 Ammonia Europe member CMB.TECH has signed an agreement with Australian company Fortescue to provide 12 ammonia-powered vessels. “The shipping industry doesn’t need more talk. It needs action,” says Katie Charuga, Fortescue Director Integrated Operations. The agreement foresees Fortescue chartering 12 vessels from CMB.TECH's dry bulk division. Three of the vessels will be equipped with dual-fuel ammonia engines and are expected to enter service by the end of this year. The remaining vessels will also be fitted with ammonia engines at a later stage. 🌱 CMB.TECH's press release on the agreement also highlights its potential impact on decarbonising the shipping industry. Provided that the vessels operate on e-ammonia, the projected reduction in CO₂ emissions could reach as much as 250,000 tonnes per year. ⚓ If that is the case, we are no longer talking about potential or feasibility - this is decarbonisation at scale happening now. We are delighted to see both companies' commitment to promoting e-ammonia as a viable pathway for maritime decarbonisation, and we will be cheering this project on every step of the way. #MaritimeDecarbonisation #Shipping #GreenShipping #AmmoniaFuel #EFuels #CleanEnergy #EnergyTransition #SustainableShipping #NetZero #Decarbonisation
