What if the biggest barrier to a 15-minute city is the regional border itself? One key insight from our DREAMS Brussels backcasting workshop yesterday was the need to rethink accessibility beyond administrative boundaries. Here at Mobilise VUB, we organize such backcasting workshops to bring stakeholders together around a shared long-term vision and work backwards to identify realistic pathways, actions and governance needed to get there.

Excited to share that we kicked-off YouthMove15, a new project on child-friendly 15-minute cities. Together with partners in Belgium, Portugal, the UK, Hungary, and the Netherlands, in 5 urban living labs (Brussels, Budapest, Groningen, Lisbon, Oxford) we will explore how children and young people’s mobility needs can be better integrated into urban and transport planning. Across five cities, the project will combine co-creation, mixed methods, and innovative tools such as VR/AR, interactive games, DIY workshops, photovoice, and walk-alongs. In Brussels, Vrije Universiteit Brussel will work with schools and local stakeholders to better understand everyday mobility experiences of school going children and co-develop more inclusive neighbourhoods. Looking forward to the collaboration with all partners and to learning from children’s perspectives on the city.

It aims to co-design new curricula for Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) in sustainable tourism and transport through interactive and innovative learning approaches.  

A new publication from our Mobilise Research Group researchers is now available in Research in Transportation Economics and it brings valuable insights into cities working toward more inclusive mobility systems. The study examines how participatory Multi-Actor Multi-Criteria Analysis (MAMCA) can support the planning of inclusive mobility hubs, drawing on three case studies in Brussels, The Hague and Vienna. By combining workshops, interviews and questionnaires, the research shows how diverse stakeholder perspectives can be integrated into transport planning from digital mobility services to shared mobility hubs. The findings of Lluis Martinez, Imre Keserű and Cathy Macharis highlight both the potential and the challenges of participatory approaches: - They help surface accessibility, safety and usability concerns early in the planning process. - They reveal the importance of institutional support, political commitment and sustained stakeholder engagement. - They offer concrete recommendations for policymakers and practitioners working on sustainable and inclusive mobility transitions. There’s a smarter alternative. 📦 Within the European research project CodeZERO, Mobilise Research Group Vrije Universiteit Brussel is studying how pick-up points can make last-mile deliveries more sustainable, inclusive and convenient. In Antwerp, we collaborate with Stad Antwerpen, bpost and Schoenen Torfs to co-design, test and evaluate pick up points as an alternative to home deliveries for e-shoppers. Why pick-up points? ✔️ Available 24/7, close to daily routes ✔️ Fewer delivery stops → less traffic and emissions ✔️ Reduced risk of missed deliveries or parcel theft 📢 Your experience matters.
