What if hospital overcapacity could be safely shifted to the patient's own living room? Three years ago Belgium introduced the legal framework for decentralised care. While the ambition to have homecare widely implemented is strong, the actual uptake across Belgian hospitals remains unbalanced. Yesterday evening we co-hosted with Vlerick Business School a symposium to tackle this challenge head-on, exploring how to safely and sustainably scale home-based care. Key highlights of the discussion included: - A testimonial from a patient, grounding our discussion in the real human impact of living with a disease. - Prof. Dr. Brecht Cardoen and Paola Argiolas presenting a brand-new Vlerick study on the practical realities of oncology@home. - Marina Libertiaux (ELIPSE NETWORKS) sharing how NarsaHome asbl achieved financial sustainability - and Dr. Melissa Cambron (AZ Sint-Jan Brugge AV) demonstrating the swift, agile set-up of home-based subcutaneous treatments for Multiple Sclerosis. To successfully scale this model in Belgium, we must collaboratively address four critical pillars: sustainable financing, clinical quality and safety, seamless digital communication, and clear role definition for remote care teams. We look forward to an evening of open debate with our partners to ensure homecare becomes a resilient, person-centred pillar of the Belgian healthcare system. When we talk about lifelong learning at Roche, we want to talk about the real energy, the late nights, and the teamwork it takes to make it happen. Upgrading your skills while navigating a fast-paced healthcare career demands tough choices, and our graduates Jonas Van Riet, Joeri Nieuwinckel, Tamara Denie, and Heleen Verhelst certainly did not do it alone. For Joeri, it meant balancing a demanding profession and intensive studies with two toddlers at home. For Heleen, it meant finding the confidence to navigate an evolving healthcare landscape to get new treatments to patients across Belgium and Luxembourg. We don't just say we value growth; we actively protect the flexibility and space our people need to achieve it.
