When organic waste is converted into renewable energy, something valuable is left behind. Most people never hear about it. After organic material moves through the anaerobic digestion process and biogas is produced, a solid residual remains. It is called digestate. And unlike the waste it came from, digestate is something farmers and agricultural operations actively want. The digestion process breaks down organic material while retaining the nutrients it contained. Nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium to the same elements found in synthetic fertilizers to are concentrated in the digestate and made more bioavailable in the process. What comes out is a natural, slow-release soil amendment that can replace or reduce dependence on manufactured fertilizers. Synthetic fertilizer production is energy-intensive and contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. Digestate offers an alternative that is produced as a byproduct of a process that was already happening. There is no additional energy cost. The nutrient recovery is built in. This is what a genuinely circular system looks like in practice. Not just waste reduction. Actual resource recovery. Why this matters: ♻️ The circle closes completely. Organic waste goes in. Renewable energy comes out. The residual returns to the soil to grow the next crop. It is in almost every Anaergia communication. Here is what it actually means. Anaerobic digestion is a biological process. In the absence of oxygen, microorganisms break down organic material to food waste, agricultural residuals, wastewater biosolids to and in doing so, produce two things: biogas and a nutrient-rich solid called digestate. The "anaerobic" part simply means without air. Seal organic material in a tank, remove the oxygen, introduce the right microbial community, and nature does the rest. The same process happens in landfills and wetlands all the time. The difference is that in a purpose-built anaerobic digester, it happens in a controlled environment where the outputs can be captured and put to use. The biogas that results is primarily methane. Upgraded and purified, it becomes renewable natural gas. The digestate that remains can be processed into fertilizer. Nothing is wasted. It sounds complex because the word sounds complex. The underlying principle is straightforward: let organic material decompose the way it naturally would, just in a controlled setting where you can capture the value. Why this matters: ♻️ The process is natural. Anaerobic digestion has been happening in nature for millions of years. Engineering it at scale is the hard part, and it is what Anaergia is built to do. 💡 Two valuable outputs, not one. Most people know that anaerobic digestion produces biogas. Fewer know that the solid residual, digestate, is equally valuable as a natural fertilizer. 🌱 Control is the difference. 🏆 Anaergia wins Education Campaign of the Year at the 2026 AD & Biogas Industry Awards. The award goes to the FSM Education Programme, delivered with our partners at Sguazzi in the Bergamo area of northern Italy, where high school students learn the science of anaerobic digestion through classroom sessions, BMP lab testing on real organic waste, and guided visits to full-scale AD facilities. The shortlist was international and impressive. Winning it means something. Why this matters: 🎓 The next generation of engineers, scientists, and policymakers will shape how the world manages organic waste. Getting them into AD facilities while they are still in school is not outreach. It is investment. 🔬 Real science, not a brochure. Students run BMP tests on actual organic waste and see full-scale digesters in operation. The programme is hands-on by design. 🌍 A model worth repeating. What Sguazzi and Anaergia built in Bergamo can work in other regions and other languages. This win is a starting point, not a finish line. 📣 Anaergia Expands into Australia with a C$14 Million Anaerobic Digestion Contract at the Goodness Grown Facility in Tongala The tomatoes grown at Goodness Grown's facility in Tongala, Australia will soon be powered by the organic waste produced growing them. That is what a circular economy looks like in practice. Through its subsidiary Anaergia Australia Pty Ltd., Anaergia has secured a C$14 million contract to deliver advanced anaerobic digestion technology at the Goodness Grown farm production site in Tongala, Australia. The facility will process up to 120,000 tonnes per year of mixed agricultural and commercial feedstocks, generating over 100 terajoules of biogas energy annually, with captured heat and CO2 recovered and returned directly to the adjoining glasshouse operations. The project is funded in part by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency. Why this matters: 🌎 A first for Anaergia in Australia. This contract establishes Anaergia Australia's first major reference facility in the Australian and New Zealand market, an important step in a growing bioenergy sector. 🌱 Circular economy at the farm level. Organic waste becomes the energy source that powers the operation that produced it. Heat, CO2, and biomethane all recovered and put back to work on site. 💡 A model for the sector. This is the first project of its kind in Australia's food production industry, and a proof point for what circular energy recovery can look like for agricultural operations at scale. Wastewater treatment plants are not just cleaning water. They are sitting on an energy source most of us have never thought about. Every wastewater treatment facility produces organic residuals as a byproduct of the treatment process. Those residuals to biosolids and sludge to contain significant energy potential that has historically gone untapped. When processed through anaerobic digestion, those organic residuals generate biogas. That biogas can then be upgraded into renewable natural gas, or used directly to help power the facility itself. Either way, a byproduct that once cost money to dispose of becomes an energy asset. For utilities managing aging infrastructure and rising operating costs, this kind of resource recovery changes the economics of wastewater treatment entirely. Why this matters: 💧 Wastewater is an organic waste stream. Most people separate wastewater treatment and renewable energy into completely different categories. They don't have to be. ⚡ Facilities can become energy producers. RNG from wastewater biosolids can power the treatment facility itself, reducing grid dependence and operating costs simultaneously. ♻️ The circular model closes completely. Water is cleaned.
