  • Cataracts affect more than 2.5 million Canadians and remain one of the leading causes of vision loss worldwide. While aging is the primary risk factor, prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is also associated with cataract development, reinforcing the importance of protecting our eyes from the sun. • As wildfire smoke affects communities across Canada, ophthalmologists may see an increase in patients experiencing ocular surface irritation. Smoke exposure can disrupt the tear film and contribute to dryness, redness, burning, irritation and light sensitivity, particularly among patients with existing dry eye or ocular surface disease.
