New Statistics Canada data shows just how uneven the impacts of climate‑driven disasters really are, and Indigenous communities are bearing the brunt. Despite representing only about five per cent of Canada’s population, nearly half of all wildfire evacuations in 2023 came from communities where most residents are Indigenous. The report outlines both immediate harms, such as evacuations, power outages, and blocked roads, and long‑term consequences, like disrupted food gathering, worsening mental health, and loss of community connections. Meanwhile, Indigenous‑led organizations are calling for urgent support to meet basic needs and sustain culturally grounded recovery. A new confidential hotline will support Canadian social purpose organizations navigating organizational closures, program endings, board transitions, mergers, successions and other types of endings. Beyond seeing closures as “failures”, the Ever/Was hotline hopes to better equip the social sector with the “psychological safety” to navigate a potential ending, including the impact on staff, communities, and the assets an organization manages. Over the summer, the hotline will support 25 organizations, after which it will seek funding for its long-term operations. Gord Delbridge, a longtime labour leader and advocate for public services in Winnipeg, has died. Delbridge’s death was announced Tuesday by CUPE Local 500, which said he died surrounded by loved ones. The former CUPE Local 500 president spent decades representing city workers, negotiating collective agreements, and pushing back against privatization and contracting out of municipal services.
