My latest for The Hollywood Reporter— "Game of Porn: The Battle to Topple OnlyFans" — is out now. It's a story about platform power, creator economics, and what happens when a company builds an enormous, society-altering success on the backs (and the fronts, feet, etc.) of a community it's ambivalent about claiming. I reported it live from the ground at this year's XBIZ Miami, with several interviews with performers, creators, sex workers and platform reps. I never cease to be amazed by the incredible marketing skills of everyone in the adult community. They can talk (and think) circles around most vanilla digital media marketers, and they have the finger on the pulse. Twelve years covering this industry both for mainstream media and for trades has given me a unique vantage point, plus nuclear-grade storytelling skills. As part of my ongoing work to fight the rise of harmful deepfake technology, I've been working behind the scenes with the Department of Justice for the past several months. Today, I'm finally able to share some incredible news. The United States, France, and Italy worked together to take down a major explicit deepfake website, CFAKE.com, that was hosting thousands of nonconsensual AI-generated images of me, other public figures, and women around the world. I got involved in this fight because I know firsthand how violating it is to have your image used without your consent. No one should have to live with that kind of exploitation. Today's action is an important step forward in holding bad actors accountable and protecting victims from tech-enabled sexual abuse. As AI continues to evolve, we have to make sure our laws and protections evolve with it. Deepfake abuse is impacting women and girls everywhere, with an estimated 1 in 8 women globally having experienced image-based abuse. P*rnhub blocked UK users over age-verification laws. Now it’s letting some back in through Apple’s device-level verification. That shift is bigger than it looks.
