Today is National Forklift Safety Day and it's the perfect time to review your lift truck safety & training programs. Effective forklift training programs are made up of several components. If even one is missing, your workers and your company can be at risk. Here's a quick checklist you can use to confirm your training program includes all the required components. ✅ Operator Classroom/Online Training: Every operator needs to have completed formal classroom or online training on forklift fundamentals, including safe operation, stability, capacity, inspections, load handling, and common hazards. ✅ Knowledge Verification: Classroom/Online training should have concluded with a test, quiz, or other assessment to verify operators understood the training material. ✅ Workplace/Equipment-Specific Training: Confirm operators have been trained on the specific forklifts, attachments, loads, traffic areas, pedestrian hazards, ramps, docks, procedures, and conditions in your workplace. ✅ Practical Evaluation: Each operator should have successfully completed a practical evaluation on the equipment that they use to confirm they can operate safely and competently, conducted by a competent trainer/evaluator. ✅ Pedestrian Training: Ensure employees who walk or work near forklifts have received pedestrian safety training. Operator training alone isn’t enough to ensure the safety of your entire team. ✅ Supervisor Training: Supervisors who oversee forklift operations should have received training so they understand the forklift safety rules and guidelines they’re expected to enforce.
