Base connection detail at The Soto Office in San Antonio, Texas. When designing exterior timber connections, our engineers are thinking carefully about long-term durability. Key details include chamfered edges and the insertion of a drip groove at the base of the column, as well as the use of a stainless steel pinned connection at the base. Also crucial is the timber species selection and the consideration of installation tolerances for ease of assembly. This modern office building was designed in collaboration with Lake Flato Architects & BOKA Powell and built with Byrne Construction Services for Hixon Properties.

Structural engineers and master builders working globally to create beautiful and efficient structures
About us
We are an award-winning group of structural engineers and master builders working globally to create beautiful and efficient structures. Since our start in 1998, we have developed a practical and technology-forward approach to the structural design of all materials, including steel, concrete, and glass - but particularly of timber, where the structure is exposed as architecture. Visual quality aligned with budget and material efficiency are key considerations as we strive to create excellence in the built environment. From Abbotsford (CAN), Vancouver (CAN), Seattle (USA) and Trento (Italy), our diverse team of 150+ includes professional engineers, digital designers, and project managers in the office, and a skilled crew of craftsmen in the shop and on site. With over 28 years of experience, we have acted as the structural engineer and builder for over 10 million sqft of structures, including many of North America's most significant mass timber projects.

Ontario's first modern timber pedestrian bridge is now open in Smiths Falls, spanning 50 metres over the UNESCO-listed Rideau Canal. We supplied the beautiful, tapered Alaskan Yellow Cedar glulam arches, which rise nearly 9 metres (30ft) above the deck and carry the bridge's doubly curved metal roof. That covered crossing was a key part of the Town's brief. The roof shelters both the pedestrians and the timber structure beneath it, and its slight cross-curvature sheds rainwater to the sides without gutters. Getting it across the canal was its own story. The whole structure was erected in a single 66,000-pound lift back in October of last year, with no support touching the water. Clear-spanning the canal protected the heritage masonry and kept construction out of the water entirely, but it also meant that once the crane was rigged, everything had to work on the first attempt. It was an honour to work closely with our partners at StructureCraft on this one. As our Trento, Italy office continues to grow, we don't just use keyboard and mouse! Every now and then, we also pick up sandpaper, paintbrushes, and power drills... Our office, perched with a lovely view of the Dolomites, is becoming a little more "StructureCraft" with these little team projects - part of owning our space a bit more. Even the kids got involved (with careful supervision from Pietro of course 😎).

Teamwork makes the dream work! Another giant step forward in our campus transformation with the installation of the historic fire boat David Campbell. Over the next several months as we complete exhibit installation in Mariners Hall, we'll finish the site work around Campbell, install a gangway, and ready her to welcome visitors on the main deck and in the engine room. Thanks to Doug Taylor, John McGowan, NessCampbell Crane & Rigging, Advanced American Construction, Diversified Marine Inc, Rickenbach Construction, Big River Excavation, Tullio Celano, Portland Fire & Rescue, Dr. Gerald Warnock, Terry Graff and many other contractors and donors for making this possible! #museumship #firefighter #maritimemuseum https://lnkd.in/gkGkHT7m

THROWBACK // 1030 Music Row in Nashville, Tennessee A modern, 5-story mass timber office building on the famous Music Row, designed specifically for the creative office market in a post-COVID environment, with easily accessible floors and state of the art HVAC / MEP systems. The superstructure, for which we were the structural engineer and builder, uses glulam framing supporting dowel laminated timber decking as the gravity system. Paired with that is a central steel core, CLT elevator shafts and a ground-level steel parkade. Anecdote Architectural Experiences Turner Construction Company Panattoni Development Company

It was an honor to watch the Confederation Drive Pedestrian Bridge open to the public on May 22, alongside Member of Parliament Bruce Fanjoy, Mayor of Smiths Falls Shawn Pankow, Lukas Gispert, Paul McMunn, Director of Public Works & Utilities, and Council Members, the representatives from the local government, Natural Resources Canada, and project partners. This represents a significant amount of effort from all departments at StructureCraft over the last 1.5 years - leading to the design and construction of Ontario's first modern timber pedestrian bridge, spanning 50m over the UNESCO-listed Rideau Canal in Smiths Falls. The real test on this one, from a PM lens, was keeping design, fabrication, and site sequencing aligned across a structure with almost no tolerance for error - glulam arches fabricated off-site, precast abutments prepared on a fixed schedule, and a single-lift erection that had to work on the first attempt. There was no flexibility to fall back on once the crane was rigged, so the coordination had to be right well before that day, not on it. The National Juneteenth Museum nears construction with the demolition of the Historic Southside Community Center. The 72,000-sqft new structure features an innovative mass timber folded plate, with glulam top and bottom chords creating an extremely slim roof spanning up to 90ft. Resulting is a series of ridges, peaks, and valleys of varying heights that combine to create a courtyard shaped as a 'nova star', inspired by the Juneteenth flag. We're honoured to be the structural engineers for this epicenter of African American education, featuring a black box theater, a food hall, immersive galleries, and a business incubator. 📸 Image 1 by BIG & Plomp / Images 2-4 by BIG National Juneteenth Museum BIG - Bjarke Ingels Group KAI Enterprises Alligood Song Architects
