Many wait years for an Alzheimer's diagnosis, often missing the window when intervention could make a difference in their journey. Closing that gap is exactly what DAC-SP's Accurate Diagnosis program is designed to accomplish: implementing blood biomarkers and confirmatory pathology testing across primary and specialty care to bring faster, more accurate diagnoses to patients and families. At the Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine's Annual Meeting, DAC-SP's Amy Deckert, PhD presented findings from the Accurate Diagnosis project spanning 8 healthcare systems. Dementia finally has a business model. Why? Because the brain is infrastructure. That was my big takeaway from this year’s Alzheimer’s Association International Conference. The aging brain is becoming something we’re able to measure and maintain. Biomarker tests, imaging, drugs, and risk calculators are giving shape to a new economy of brain health. This is great progress. It also means the tools defining Alzheimer’s disease will increasingly be owned by companies with the power to shape diagnosis and care. New report from the Milken Institute tackles a question central to DAC's mission: are health systems ready to deliver innovation to all, not just a few? Drawing on insights from interviews with DAC-SP's Amy Deckert, PhD and Tim MacLeod, PhD and several DAC-SP sites, alongside patient focus groups and a landscape analysis, the report examines the barriers and accelerators for BBM implementation and lays out concrete recommendations to make BBMs the new standard of care. New today in Nature Portfolio Health: poverty, food insecurity, unemployment, and household debt aren't just economic problems. They shape brain health from before birth to late-life Alzheimer's. The numbers are stark: Africa spends under $1 per capita on brain health, against Europe's $46. And dementia in eastern sub-Saharan Africa is set to rise 357% by 2050. Cyprian Mcwayizeni Mostert and Davos Alzheimer's Collaborative colleagues argue that five social protection levers, cash transfers, school feeding, unemployment grants, social pensions, and debt relief, can build "brain capital" by steadying households, easing chronic stress, and protecting cognitive reserve. Latin America has run these programs longer, and it shows: dementia deaths fell there while climbing across much of Africa. Poverty relief and clinical care aren't competing priorities. Dementia prevention is economic policy. World Health Organization's new second-edition guidelines on reducing cognitive decline and dementia risk make it clear: with no widely available cure, prevention is the strategy. Look at Fig. 2. The modifiable risk factors span education, air quality, food systems, workplaces, social connection, and financial security. No health ministry can tackle that list alone. This is exactly why we need the brain economy: an economic transition that prioritizes investment in brain capital, the asset integrating brain health and brain skills, across the lifespan. Protecting and building brains is the foundation of workforce resilience and inclusive growth, with trillions in economic opportunity on the table. WHO has given us the evidence base. At the Global Brain Economy Initiative, we're building the frameworks, metrics, and financing approaches to act on it.
