Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi)

🚨 For the first time this year, a #dengue case has been detected in France without travel to an endemic country. This means the virus was transmitted locally by the Aedes mosquito, which is now established in parts of Europe. Dengue is no longer just a tropical disease. As the climate warms, the mosquito that carries dengue is expanding its reach and bringing the disease to new regions. Most cases cause high fever, severe pain, and fatigue. But dengue can also progress to severe dengue, leading to life-threatening complications. Despite this growing global threat, there is still no specific treatment for dengue. 👉 That’s why we recently signed a licensing agreement with the Serum Institute of India Pvt. Ltd. to support the development of what could become the world’s first dengue treatment, with clinical trials set to begin in Brazil, Malaysia, and Thailand—countries heavily affected by the disease. For many years, #mycetoma, a slow-growing infection that causes severe disabilities was neglected and patients suffered in silence. A major turning point came in 2016 when the World Health Organization included it in its list of neglected tropical diseases. Since then, partners have collaboratively driven progress forward. Last week, experts came together in a webinar to reflect on the last 10 years of progress and look at future priorities to tackle this devastating disease.    🗣️ We had an exceptional line up of global health leaders working in the fungal disease space: Dr Dallas Smith, Ahmed Fahal, nathalie strub wourgaft, JOHN EKAI, Dr Augustin Kadima Ebeja, and Dr. Borna Nyaoke-Anoke, with Linet Otieno moderating the panel.     So, what did we learn? 👇  🔸 New diagnostics (like molecular tools, ultrasound-based diagnosis, and even AI) could help better identify different forms of mycetoma, leading to patients being put on treatment faster.  🔸 There is an urgent need for more treatment options that are more effective, accessible and affordable. 🔸 Strengthening local capacity and raising awareness are key to improve recognition of mycetoma and other fungal diseases.  🔸 Stronger collaboration between endemic countries, WHO, researchers, communities, donors, and product development partnerships is essential.     🙏 We’ve come a long way, but there’s a lot more to do. This year marks a decade since the World Health Organization recognized #mycetoma as a neglected tropical disease (NTD). The path to that recognition involved many advocates, including a group of students who refused to let the disease go unnoticed. In 2014, Annie Liang, MPH attended the 67th World Health Assembly as an undergraduate student with UAEM (Universities Allied for Essential Medicines). At a side event on mycetoma hosted by Sudan, her colleagues found a room where brochures had been laid out with care, and almost no one came. And a year later, Annie pitched mycetoma to the Untold Global Health Stories competition run by Global Health Now and Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH). It won, and the reporting that followed helped build the momentum that saw mycetoma listed by WHO in 2016. "It doesn't matter how small you feel, or who you are. Everyone has a voice, and that voice matters. A positive diagnosis meant weeks away from home to receive treatment.  💊 Today, with acoziborole, a one-day treatment course of three pills, care can become simpler and more accessible for patients, even in the most remote settings. 🤝 This milestone was made possible through the strong partnership with Sanofi, which contributed expertise in regulatory affairs, manufacturing, and supply, complementing our critical role in bringing deep knowledge of sleeping sickness and extensive experience conducting clinical trials in Africa. 🌍 And by working closely with partners like WHO, we can make sure this new treatment reaches the patients who need it most, completely free of charge through Sanofi Foundation. 📽️ Watch the video to hear more about our partnership model.
