🐄 Supporting Safer Transhumance in the Central African Republic Creating safe transhumance routes is about more than mapping a path. It requires bringing together local authorities, communities and herders to agree on where livestock can move and rest. In collaboration with ONG ACPEF and GDAP, FSD has helped identify transhumance corridors and livestock resting areas in Bang and Mann by facilitating discussions with herders and community representatives. These jointly agreed routes will help reduce tensions and support the livelihoods of pastoralist communities. By promoting dialogue, the project contributes to building safer, more resilient communities in the Central African Republic. ✅ A Second Demining Team for UCHP As part of an FSD-led capacity-building programme for Ukrainian mine action operators, a new demining team received training and mentoring from FSD before transferring to UCHP. Having successfully passed the required assessments, the team has begun clearing land contaminated by explosive ordnance. With two operational teams, UCHP can work simultaneously in more locations and respond more quickly to community needs, particularly in Kharkiv Oblast, one of the regions most heavily contaminated by mines and explosive remnants of war. Together, the two teams cleared almost 45,000 square metres of land in June. 🏗️ Clearing the Way for Recovery Before damaged buildings can be repaired and communities can rebuild, the area must first be checked for explosive hazards and the debris safely removed. FSD's specialised rubble removal team uses armoured machinery to clear debris from damaged sites in Chernihiv, enabling safe access and supporting further clearance operations. The team is currently clearing debris from a car repair workshop which was damaged in a strike. Once the rubble is cleared, the owners can begin restoration and reconstruction, and return to work. Removing rubble is an important step towards recovery, helping businesses reopen, protecting jobs, and supporting local economic activity. 🚧 FSD Rubble Clearance Team in Action In Chernihiv, a garage cooperative was used by local residents to store their vehicles, tools and other belongings — everything they had accumulated over the years. But, after it was heavily damaged by a missile strike, several garages were destroyed, vehicles were burnt, and many residents lost property. Working alongside the The State Emergency Service of Ukraine, FSD checked the strike-damaged debris for explosive hazards and safely cleared the site, helping restore access to an area used by more than 1,300 families. In total, the team cleared 532 m³ of debris. As an example of the concealed hazards encountered during the operation, the team safely removed a gas cylinder buried beneath the rubble, eliminating a potential fire and explosion risk. Recently, the cooperative presented FSD with a letter of appreciation, recognising the team's contribution to helping the community begin its recovery.
