It’s about Earth Overshoot Day. What we found is that it is the highest overshoot ever recorded, yet most countries remain unprepared. Weird. Hardly any national governments treat resource security as a central part of their economic planning, even as ecological overshoot fuels stagflation, food and energy insecurity, health crises, and conflict, according to the special report “Prepared for the Predictable? Nederland vraagt structureel meer van de natuur dan het eigen grondgebied kan leveren – voor voedsel, wonen en het opvangen van CO2 – en dekt dat tekort af met import en het vertrouwen dat de rest van de wereld zijn fossiele emissies absorbeert. Op een eindige planeet is dit echter niet houdbaar en de risico’s hiervan zijn voorspelbaar. Overheden die hun land en inwoners willen beschermen, bereiden zich voor op een wereld van grondstoffenschaarste en klimaatverandering – niet pas wanneer de crisis toeslaat. Nieuw wereldwijd onderzoek van Global Footprint Network en Greenings laat zien dat economische strategieën van landen grotendeels blind zijn voor de risico’s van Overshoot. Voor het rapport “Prepared for the Predictable?” analyseerden David Lin, Mathis Wackernagel en collega’s de officiële strategiedocumenten van tientallen landen. Humanity is currently using nature 73% faster than ecosystems can regenerate, the equivalent of living off 1.73 Earths. More comfortable reading it in a different language? Across dozens of countries, we find that none have a national strategy that meaningfully acknowledges ecological overshoot, despite mounting evidence that resource security is now a foundation of economic stability. Humanity is using nature 73% faster than ecosystems can regenerate – the equivalent of living off 1.73 Earths, according to the Global Footprint Network. As we approach this year’s Earth Overshoot Day, that imbalance highlights the growing pressure on biosphere integrity, one of the nine planetary boundaries. Biosphere integrity refers to the capacity of ecosystems across the planet to support life and help maintain a stable Earth system. It depends on the diversity, health and interactions of the organisms within them. Today, this planetary boundary is strongly transgressed. For more than a century, human appropriation of net primary production (HANPP) – the plant energy and biomass we use for food, fuel, fodder and fibre – has exceeded sustainable levels. Protecting and restoring biosphere integrity is essential for strengthening the resilience of the Earth system. Hot off the press!!! Our Global Footprint Network and Greenings report is examining how national economic strategies account for resource security and #ecologicalovershoot. We assembled a massive corpus of publicly available reports. We designed a framework to assess recognition and response. We then deployed it within four commercially accessible LLMs. The results show that governments recognise resource-security risks but do not connect them to overshoot. This is just the beginning. I’m most excited to explore: • Measuring the semantic representation of nature, resilience and resource security as terms of art in national policy • Evaluating the gap between issued policy and real world action to plot where ambition translates to implementation (or doesn’t) • Discussing how LLMs can be fine tuned to support large scale analysis of policy and governance priorities (or not!) Our new #EarthOvershootDay report, which draws on countries’ published economic strategies as the source, examines whether those national economic strategies account for resource security and #ecologicalovershoot. It argues that such resource security is essential because economies depend on finite physical inputs, yet their GDP-focused frameworks largely ignore these constraints, contributing to persistent global overshoot since the 1970s. Using a structured rubric and AI-assisted analysis of key policy documents, the report finds that none among the countries analyzed fully integrates resource limits into its economic strategy. While some nations show partial awareness, most lack binding responses. This report highlights systemic fragility and policy gaps, and calls on governments to map dependencies and build resilience in anticipation of predictable resource constraints and climate disruptions. https://lnkd.in/e5P2MB46
