An important milestone in more harmonized greenhouse gas accounting has been announced alongside our partners at Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol). 🌍 Building on the ISO–GHG Protocol partnership, we are aligning our corporate standards development programmes around a shared goal: a single, co-branded corporate greenhouse gas accounting standard. 🌍 Turning climate adaptation commitments into practical action remains one of the biggest implementation challenges facing countries today. ISO has launched a new initiative to help close that gap. Standards for climate action: advancing adaptation in LAC, a three-year project strengthening climate adaptation in Colombia, Costa Rica and Trinidad and Tobago, delivered in partnership with UNIDO and funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). As executing entity, ISO leads technical implementation, applying four ISO climate adaptation standards to help translate national commitments into measurable, investable action. 🤝 Working with national standards bodies ICONTEC, INTECO - Instituto de Normas Técnicas de Costa Rica and Trinidad and Tobago Bureau of Standards, the project builds local technical capacity and supports governments and institutions in integrating adaptation into planning and decision-making. ISO/TC 207 and the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) provide technical oversight to ensure consistent application across all three countries. 💡 Developing International Standards is only part of the journey, lasting impact comes when they're understood, adopted and applied where they're needed most. Last week, ISO Secretary-General Sergio Mujica visited Serbia and Croatia, meeting with our members at the Institut za standardizaciju Srbije (Institute for Standardization of Serbia) and the Hrvatski zavod za norme Croatian Standards Institute. The visits were an important opportunity to strengthen dialogue with ISO members in the region, exchange perspectives with staff, technical experts and stakeholders, and discuss how International Standards can continue to support trade, innovation, quality, safety and sustainable development. Discussions explored the future of standards development, including digital transformation, artificial intelligence, the evolving role of national standards bodies, and the importance of greater regional and international cooperation. Thank you to the Institute for Standardization of Serbia and the Croatian Standards Institute for the warm welcome and constructive discussions. 🌿 The conversations at this week’s Global Nature Positive Summit kept coming back to one practical question: how do we make nature-positive action easier to implement, compare and scale? With 2030 approaching, and the UN Biodiversity Conference, COP17, in Armenia later this year, there was a strong focus throughout the summit on moving from commitments to implementation. Colleagues Adam Stingemore, from Standards Australia, and Daan van der Wekken from BSI represented ISO in conversations on aligning biodiversity and climate rulemaking, and on strengthening interoperability across the growing landscape of nature-related standards, frameworks and disclosure initiatives. 🤝 A clear theme was the need to make these approaches work better together. As organizations continue to develop metrics, reporting frameworks and guidance, greater alignment will be essential to reduce complexity and support implementation in practice. 🌍 This is where International Standards can make a meaningful contribution: by providing globally agreed foundations that help different frameworks and jurisdictions connect, rather than evolve in parallel. It was encouraging to see a strong drive to collaborate across organizations, including the Nature Positive Initiative, Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development Daiichi Life Group, Inc., Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), Capitals Coalition, EY and many others. Thank you so much to the Japanese Ministry of Environment and NPI for convening these important discussions. As AI for Good comes to a close in Geneva, we leave with a stronger sense of the work ahead and the collaboration needed to move it forward. Across the week, we joined discussions including diverse perspectives on how AI governance can be made practical, inclusive and trusted. The conversations reflected both the urgency and the complexity of the task. AI governance is not only about setting principles. It's about creating the conditions for those principles to be understood, implemented and applied in real-world contexts. International Standards have an important role to play in this effort. On the final day, discussions reinforced two important messages: ➡️First, AI governance needs practical tools. Legal frameworks, impact assessment methodologies and International Standards can work together to help turn governance ambitions into concrete action. ➡️Second, inclusive AI governance must be grounded in human rights and capacity building. Standards can help translate principles such as privacy, transparency, accountability and non-discrimination into practical, risk-based requirements. But their impact depends on helping policymakers, National Standards Bodies and other stakeholders understand, apply and shape them. We are grateful to International Telecommunication Union for convening these important discussion, and to the many stakeholders who brought their perspectives to the table throughout the week. As the global AI community comes together in Geneva for #AIforGood, one topic sits front and centre: Ethical AI governance. AI is advancing fast. How do we ensure it evolves in ways that are safe, inclusive, trustworthy and benefit everyone? International Standards will certainly have a part to play. The Seoul Statement, a joint initiative between the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission), ISO and the International Telecommunication Union, sets out a shared vision for the standards community for responsible, human-centred AI. Together, we are guided by four commitments which recognize that effective AI governance must go beyond technical progress to embrace human rights, socio-technical realities, inclusive participation and capacity building. The path ahead is a challenging one. We need alignment urgently. Yet as conversations evolve this week, our appetite for collaboration couldn’t be stronger. We’re midway through #AIforGood week, and standing room only at our joint session with the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) today highlighted the growing interest in how International Standards can serve as a bridge between AI governance and real-world implementation. The discussion explored how standards such as ISO/IEC 42001 and 42005 can help translate legal requirements and AI assessment methodologies into actionable approaches for governments, deployers and public authorities. 🔉What did we hear from presenters and participants? 🔸International Standards and legal frameworks, such as the Council of Europe’s Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law AI Impact Assessment methodology, are complementary. Together, they help turn AI principles into practical governance approaches that consider legal, human rights, policy, technical and organizational perspectives. 🔸ISO’s capacity building journey on AI policy and standards is helping countries turn governance ambitions into action, equipping policymakers and National Standards Bodies to integrate AI standards into national governance frameworks, strengthening collaboration on responsible AI and contributing to outcomes such as the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), Egypt's National AI Governance Framework. 🔸Applying standards in practice helps refine AI governance approaches. Participants discussed an impact assessment pilot project in which a real-world AI system is assessed using through IEC and ISO standards to help identify which elements of AI impact assessment are most relevant to different contexts. These discussions aligned with messages shared at the World Economic Forum’s high-level dialogue on safe, secure and trustworthy AI governance, where our Secretary-General Sergio Mujica highlighted how International Standards can help reduce fragmentation by providing a common language and shared benchmarks across borders. He emphasized the importance of inclusive standards development, ensuring that all those affected by AI have a role in shaping its governance. Together, these conversations reinforce a shared goal: turning AI governance principles into trusted approaches that work across borders and benefit us all.
