There is no single ranger story.   Their work is everywhere. From collaboration and climate challenges to K-Pop, the 48th UNESCO World Heritage Committee concluded this week with important decisions reinforcing both the opportunities and challenges facing the world's most exceptional natural places. Among the highlights were the inscription of seven new natural and mixed World Heritage sites, the expansion of one existing site and the renomination of another. There was also the adoption of a new Roadmap to strengthen Indigenous Peoples' engagement in the World Heritage Convention, and a clear message that climate change is becoming one of the defining threats to World Heritage. Ecosystem health isn't only shaped in forests or wetlands — it's shaped in offices and factories too. In Japan, biodiversity has steadily climbed the corporate agenda, thanks to almost three decades of collaboration between the business community and IUCN. In 1996, the Keidanren Nature Conservation Council (KNCC), founded by the Japan Business Federation (Keidanren), became the first indisutrial association to join as an IUCN Member — laying the groundwork for a partnership still growing today. That momentum is backed by the Keidanren Nature Conservation Fund (KNCF), established in 1992, which has channelled around 5.5 billion yen (USD 38 million) into more than 1,820 conservation projects. In Japan, this has meant building capacity for Ecosystem-based Disaster Risk Reduction and training on the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems. Beyond Japan, KNCF has backed IUCN-led work in Thailand and Bangladesh, strengthening $biodiversity protection and sustainable livelihoods. Nearly 30 years on, KNCC's partnership with IUCN shows how the private sector can play an active role in global biodiversity efforts — not just by funding conservation, but by embedding environmental stewardship into how business is done. Every tree begins with a seed — and in Peru's dry forests, restoring that first step is a community effort. Across 3.5 million hectares of dry forest on Peru's northern coast, 114 rural communities face mounting pressure from agricultural expansion, overgrazing, and climate change. The Bosque Seco Project, led by IUCN and FAO as GEF Implementing Agencies and executed by Peru's Ministry of the Environment with Profonanpe, is restoring these landscapes with local communities at the centre. In the José Ignacio Távara Rural Community, around 150 families are restoring 304 hectares using the Nendo Dango (seed ball) technique — clay, goat manure, and native seeds combined to protect seeds until the rains come, alongside "nurse structures" that shield young saplings from grazing livestock. The work supports Peru's target of restoring at least 0.5% of degraded land annually — proof that landscape restoration starts with community knowledge and resilience. Seven IUCN-recommended natural and mixed sites have been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List during the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee in Busan, Republic of Korea. From the climate-resilient coral reefs of Jordan’s Aqaba Marine Reserve to South Sudan’s Boma-Badingilo Migratory Landscape, home to the world's largest terrestrial mammal migration, these sites showcase some of the planet's most extraordinary biodiversity, geological heritage and ecological processes. The Committee also approved the extension of Getbol, Korean Tidal Flats, and recognised the ecological significance of Garamba National Park through updated World Heritage criteria. As the official advisory body on nature under the World Heritage Convention, IUCN is proud to support the identification, assessment and conservation of these globally important places. Mangroves are among the most productive and valuable ecosystems on Earth — but they face growing pressure from human activity, making it essential to understand their status for effective conservation. IUCN's global assessment does just that. For the first time, every occurrence of a single Ecosystem Functional Group has been evaluated worldwide. The global scale matters: many of the ecological functions and services mangroves provide are transboundary, so understanding their status at this scale is key to protecting them effectively. Yale University, IUCN and Indigenous Peoples' organizations from Latin America have launched the Intercultural Training Programme on Rights-Based Conservation 🌎 Built from the voices and lived experiences of Indigenous Peoples across the region, the initiative aims to strengthen Indigenous leadership in territorial governance and rights-based conservation. Designed through a participatory co-design process and grounded in a peer-to-peer learning approach, the programme creates a space for mutual learning, where academic excellence, conservation expertise and Indigenous knowledge come together to shape new models for rights-based conservation. 🤝 The programme is developed by Yale's Environmental Leadership & Training Initiative (ELTI) and the Yale Center for Environmental Justice, in partnership with IUCN and representatives of Indigenous organizations from Latin America. It is supported by the Swedish International International Development Cooperation Agency and the European Union.
