Some stories remind us why we started. Our Co-founder and CEO, Nedjip Tozun, recently reflected on the journey behind d.light with Stanford University Graduate School of Business. One line especially captures the purpose that has guided us at d.light from day one: “Early on in d.light’s history, I met this nurse. They had been delivering babies with kerosene lanterns—or they’d have to turn women away if they were in labor in the middle of the night. And she said, ‘You don’t know how many d.light babies there are that I’ve delivered.’” Stories like these remind us that access to reliable energy is about so much more than electricity. It’s about safer childbirth, better healthcare, brighter classrooms, thriving businesses, and opportunities that simply weren’t possible before. Nearly two decades later, that purpose continues to inspire every member of the d.light team as we work to make clean and reliable energy accessible to millions more. Thank you to Stanford University Graduate School of Business for sharing our journey, and to our customers, partners, and colleagues around the world for helping us create impact that truly changes lives.

When Nedjip Tozun, MBA ’07, co-founded d.light with Sam Goldman, MBA ’07, 1.6 billion people still lit their homes with kerosene. Their goal was to make the hazardous fuel source obsolete. The idea began before business school, when Goldman was living in Benin, and his neighbor’s son was badly burned in a kerosene accident. “Sam realized that this is just fundamentally an injustice,” Tozun recalls. Since his own family had emigrated from Northern Cyprus, where power grids are unstable, Tozun also knew the “gap of opportunity based on where you’re born. I really felt like that was wrong.” The pair met at Stanford GSB and founded d.light in 2007, building solar products that are sustainable, safe, and affordable. Their founding goal — moving 100 million people off kerosene by 2020 — was met that January. And today, the count stands at 150 million across 70 countries. “Early on in d.light’s history, I met this nurse,” Tozun recalls. “They had been delivering babies with kerosene lanterns — or they’d have to turn women away if they were in labor in the middle of the night. And she said, ‘You don’t know how many d.light babies there are that I’ve delivered.’” Those human stories encapsulate why Tozun does what he does. “There’s a lot of deep personal satisfaction that I get in having a life that’s driven by purpose,” he says. “It’s not always the easiest, but [it] has always been exciting. I wouldn’t change it for anything.” https://brnw.ch/21x4t9I

Today, we announced that d.light’s PAYGo receivables securitization platform has reached $1 billion in cumulative purchasing capacity, following the close of a $50 million Green Bond issued by African Frontier Capital. This transaction is a sector first, marking the first time the off-grid solar industry has accessed the public bond markets through a PAYGo receivables securitization structure. The bond will be listed on the London Stock Exchange’s International Securities Market and is supported by a full guarantee of principal and interest from the Green Guarantee Company. The notes are rated BBB by Sustainable Fitch and Standard Chartered Bank acted as placement and settlement agent. The bond was placed with a mix of UK and US institutional investors including Legal & GeneralCalvert Impact Capital and Ceniarth. For d.light, this is about more than a financing milestone. It shows that high-quality energy access receivables in Africa can attract institutional capital at scale when structured with transparency, discipline, and the right credit enhancement. Since pioneering the sector’s first PAYGo solar receivables securitization in 2020, d.light has continued to build a platform designed to recycle capital efficiently, lower the cost of financing, and help make affordable solar products accessible to customers who are often excluded from traditional consumer credit. By 2030, our securitization platform is expected to enable more than 20 million new first-time energy access connections and create over 50,000 jobs across our markets, positioning d.light as a meaningful contributor towards the Mission 300 initiative led by the The World Bank Group and African Development Bank Group , which aims to deliver 300 million first-time electricity connections across Africa by 2030. Most importantly, none of this would be possible without the tireless efforts of the d.light team across our markets, who go the extra mile every day to ensure that our products reach even the most remote communities. We are also deeply grateful to our customers, whose trust in d.light and commitment to repayment make this platform possible. This is an important step toward opening larger pools of institutional capital for energy access — and toward achieving universal access to affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy. This World Environment Day, we’re celebrating the power of clean energy to create lasting impact. To date, d.light has helped offset more than 43 million tons of CO₂ emissions by replacing kerosene lamps and fossil fuel-based energy sources with solar solutions. What does 43 million tons of CO₂ look like? It’s equivalent to the carbon absorbed by approximately 700 million tree seedlings grown for 10 years — an area of reforestation larger than major cities around the world. But behind every ton of carbon avoided is something even more meaningful: a family with safer lighting, a student with more time to study, and a small business with the power to grow. This World Environment Day, we’re reminded that protecting our planet and improving lives can go hand in hand. #WorldEnvironmentDay #ClimateAction

Off-grid solar and distributed renewable energy could deliver electricity to nearly half of the 300 million people Mission 300 aims to reach. GOGLA’s new Mission 300 Compact Analysis provides a useful view of how these solutions are reflected in national electrification plans across 30 countries. At d.light , we have seen firsthand how off-grid solar can accelerate access to reliable energy for underserved communities—supporting households, entrepreneurs, and essential services where traditional grid expansion is unreliable.
