9 jurisdictions, grouped by status. Filter or search below.
What is in scope Every jurisdiction that has launched a retail CBDC, plus the major-economy programmes still at pilot, research or halted stage. Three retail CBDCs have launched worldwide and all three are here; a jurisdiction that has published no position cannot appear.
9 jurisdictions. No single most common stage: Launched and Pilot each appear in 3 of 9 jurisdictions. Only 3 retail CBDCs have launched anywhere in the world, and all of them are in this table. The rest of the field is pilots and research. 5 of 9 disclose a start date; the rest publish none, and this table leaves those cells empty rather than estimating them.

- Tracker launched covering 8 jurisdictions from central bank publications 31 Jul 2026
How this tracker is maintained
Every entry is a position the central bank or monetary authority stated itself.
-
Sourced
Jurisdictions enter on their own central bank’s published position: a launch, a pilot, a research programme, or a decision to stop. Reporting about a programme is not a position; the authority’s own publication is.
-
Dated
Where the authority states a start date we record it, and where it states none the field stays empty rather than being inferred from an announcement.
-
Re-checked
Positions are re-checked every 90 days, which matches how slowly these programmes actually move. A stage change is recorded when the authority announces it, not when it is reported.
- Why are only some countries listed?
- The table covers every jurisdiction that has launched a retail CBDC, plus the major-economy programmes at pilot, research or halted stage. Three retail CBDCs have launched anywhere in the world and all three are here; the rest of the field is exploratory, and listing all of it would mean listing intentions rather than positions.
- Does pilot mean it is going to launch?
- No. Pilots are paused, narrowed and abandoned, and at least one major economy here has halted work entirely. Stage records where a programme is, not where it is heading.
- Is a wholesale CBDC the same thing?
- No. This tracker covers retail CBDCs, the kind a member of the public could hold. Wholesale settlement projects between banks are a separate class of programme and are out of scope.
This is informational content and does not constitute legal or financial advice. Programme stages move, pause, and are renamed, and a pilot is not a commitment to launch. Confirm current status with the named central bank before acting.
