How can we better understand the behaviour of large composite structures under real operating conditions? Fiber-optic shape sensing technologies have already demonstrated their value in demanding applications where precise information about the position and deformation of complex structures is essential. At FBGS, we are exploring how these capabilities could support future applications beyond the medical field – for example in structural testing, digital twins and structural health monitoring of advanced composite structures. High-resolution fiber optic sensing offers several unique advantages: Real-time shape and strain information Minimal impact on weight and structural properties Immunity to electromagnetic interference Seamless integration into complex environments As composite materials continue to play an increasingly important role in aerospace and other industries, new sensing approaches may help engineers gain deeper insights into structural behaviour and validate simulation models more efficiently. We are always interested in discussing new challenges and potential applications for fiber-optic shape sensing. Where do you see the biggest opportunities for shape sensing in future composite structures? #ShapeSense #FiberOpticSensing #StructuralHealthMonitoring #Composites #SmartStructures #DigitalTwin #Aerospace #FBG

Fiber optic sensing technology for cryogenic tanks in aviation The use of liquid hydrogen (LH₂) as an energy carrier is central to achieving climate-neutral aviation. However, its safe storage in CFRP cryogenic tanks at temperatures below 120 K requires higher specifications on materials, joining technologies, and monitoring systems. In particular, there is a lack of cryogenically compatible sensor systems that can be structurally integrated, as well as standardized testing and evaluation methods for their use in safety-critical tank structures. The objective of the SEHRKALT joint project is to collaboratively develop, integrate, and validate cryogenically compatible fiber Bragg grating sensors for CFRP cryogenic tanks monitoring. These are designed to enable high-precision temperature and strain measurements in the temperature range from 20 K to 120 K and to be permanently integrated into CFRP structures. In this way, SEHRKALT is laying the groundwork for a reliable SHM system for LH₂ tanks and supporting the adoption of hydrogen-based propulsion technologies in aviation. This research project (grant number 20M2436A) is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) pursuant to a resolution of the German Bundestag as part of the Aviation Research Program (LuFo VII-1), for which we express our sincere gratitude. Strong for the region FBGS helps restore the Orlamünde primary school grand piano The indoor school sports hall was unusually loud this Friday afternoon. Shouts and high-pitched squeaking noises filled the air. Typical sounds for sports shoes and supporting voices. Tension and excitement were already there long before the gunshot started the charity run. After all, 250 people joined the event! Orlamünde. A small town in Thuringia about 25 km from Jena. Old school, old building, old grand piano. And every year, a new generation of school kids. Currently the primary school is being renovated and plans to reopen for the start of the school year 2027. Along with this comes another project: the restoration of the 120-year-old school’s grand piano. A center piece of its history, building and music lessons. The necessary funding was unfortunately missing, but the school came up with the idea of organizing a charity run. Each school kid would find a sponsor and each sponsor would donate for the run. This is how FBGS became sponsor of 1st grader Henry. Henry achieved some strong 42 rounds – making him third best runner in the entire school. His little brother Georg added 22 rounds - to reach a total of 64 rounds! We are proud to invest in a different way in the future of school kids in our region – through sports and music.

WHITE PAPER | 3D tip force sensing Our new technology presented in exclusivity In minimally invasive and robotic interventions, knowing the amount of force applied at the distal tip of an instrument is essential. Excessive contact force can damage delicate tissues or the tool itself, while insufficient force may lead to ineffective or unstable operation. However, the miniature scale and the constrained environment often make it extremely difficult to integrate conventional electronic sensors near the instrument tip. FBGS - Tailored Fiber Optic Sensing Components & Solutions is now making its most advanced force sensing technology public. Based on fiber Bragg gratings the ForceProbe® provides reliable force feedback for both axial (along the instrument axis) and lateral (perpendicular) forces detected with millinewton-level accuracy while also enabling temperature compensation and even shape sensing through the same fiber. This capability turns FBG technology into an enabling platform for intelligent, miniaturised surgical instruments used in a wide range of next-generation interventional and robotic procedures.
