The water leaving the RO unit is not the whole story When people think about water quality, they often think about production. That line of thinking makes sense, without production there is no water. But water quality is not determined just by where water starts. It's influenced by storage, distribution, point of use...etc. A lot can happen between seawater entering the system and drinking water reaching someone's bottle. That is why water quality should always be viewed as a chain and never a single component. When was the last time you looked beyond the RO system? A world first, and we're proud to be part of it! PosHYdon has successfully started producing green hydrogen on an operational North Sea platform, bringing together offshore wind, hydrogen production, and existing offshore infrastructure in a way that has never been done before. As partner, we're contributing through desalination. After all, before seawater can become green hydrogen, it first needs to become high-quality demineralized water. It's exciting to see years of collaboration, innovation, and testing culminate in this milestone for the future of energy in the North Sea. A huge congratulations to everyone involved! 🌊⚡
𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝗲𝗮: 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝗛𝗬𝗱𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 This summer marks an important milestone in the energy transition. The PosHYdon project has successfully started the production of green hydrogen on an operational offshore platform. On the Q13a-A platform, located approximately 13 km off the coast of Scheveningen and operated by Eni Energy Netherlands, a world-first integrated energy system is now in operation, combining offshore wind energy, hydrogen production and natural gas production at sea. Using electricity generated from offshore wind, seawater is converted into demineralised water and subsequently into green hydrogen through electrolysis. This achievement marks the start of the offshore test phase and demonstrates that offshore green hydrogen production can be both feasible and safe, while supporting the development of a future-proof energy system in the North Sea. PosHYdon is more than a technical demonstration. The pilot is designed to: * Test electrolysis under variable offshore wind conditions * Build knowledge on offshore costs, maintenance and system performance * Gain practical experience with integrating energy systems at sea * Demonstrate how existing offshore infrastructure can be repurposed for a sustainable future Read the news item here: https://lnkd.in/ew53vuSs This milestone is the result of close collaboration between public and private partners, supported by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy. When you rely on bottled water on board, you're solving a behavioral problem by creating a logistical one. We see it all the time... Your crew don't trust the water from the bottle filling station, so they stop using it. Now, you're loading, storing, moving and disposing of thousands of bottles, despite already having perfectly safe drinking water available on board. The trust issue has been solved with extra costs and logistics. If you've spent your entire life avoiding tap water at home, it's not unreasonable to approach onboard drinking water with the same skepticism. That's why producing safe drinking water is only part of the equation. Building confidence in that water matters just as much. When crews understand where their drinking water comes from, how it is treated, and how its quality is monitored, they're far more likely to trust it. The safest water in the world is useless if nobody drinks it. A surprising number of water related challenges on board have nothing to do with water quality, but are all about perception. We've seen it time and time again: if crew don't trust the water, they won't drink it. And if they don't drink it, the benefits of producing safe drinking water never fully reach the people it's intended for. That's why water management shouldn't stop at system installation and compliance. It should include awareness, communication and training. The goal goes beyond simply producing safe water, it's is making sure your crew feel confident enough to drink it. Onboard water has mastered the art of being taken for granted. Think about it.... Nobody attends a meeting because the drinking water was fine this month. Or sends a congratulatory email because the storage tanks behaved themselves. Nobody says: "Great job everyone. The water was completely uneventful again and nothing of note happened." But they should be. Because if water only gets brought up when something goes wrong, you're not managing water, you're managing the consequences. Safe water on board should be uneventful, but the challenge is making sure it stays that way. Our client LAXEY farms its salmon entirely on land, replicating the natural lifecycle of the salmon. That means every phase of the salmon's life requires a different level of salinity and strict water quality control. To support this process, we've designed a reverse osmosis installation that helps create the perfect conditions throughout the facility. Safe Drinking Water for Offshore Energy 💧⚡ Last week, our team delivered a containerized Reverse Osmosis unit to the Prinses Elisabeth Island, a world-first energy hub in the North Sea, developed by TM Edison, a collaboration between Jan De Nul Group and DEME Group. This artificial island will connect multiple Belgian offshore wind farms, combine their power and bring it ashore. A key piece of the energy transition. Behind all that infrastructure, there are people. During the construction phase, a maximum of 200 employees will be living and working on the island, which means one essential element must always be in place: a reliable supply of safe drinking water. And that's where we come in! Our solution, equipped with RO, a hydrophore, and UV disinfection, ensures constant access to safe drinking water. Because when water is taken care of, crews can focus on what they do best; building the future of energy. A floating village on a river. 400 workers. One question: where does the drinking water come from? At the Calandkanaal in Rotterdam, we currently have two 12m³ tank containers and an additional 4m³ storage unit up and running, supplying drinking water to the floating subcontractors village supporting the refit of the Solitaire. The Solitaire (Allseas) is one of the world's most advanced pipelay vessels. 300 meters long, capable of laying more than 9 km of pipeline per day, and world record holder for the deepest pipeline installation ever: 2,775 meters below sea level. She is currently undergoing a major 10-month modernization campaign. Wherever people work, they need clean drinking water. We make sure it's just there. Seafarers carry world trade. And with it, they carry responsibility, pressure and great risk. Today, on the International Day of the Seafarer, we want to take a moment to acknowledge the people at sea who keep global trade moving. The convenience we experience on shore is easy to take for granted. But behind every online order, every shipment of raw materials, and even the energy powering our homes, there are people working far from home, under demanding conditions. The safety and wellbeing of the crew must never be taken for granted. We want to pay special attention to our own Hatenboer-Neptunus crew, who are out on the water every day, supplying vessels with fresh water no matter the weather conditions. Their work plays an essential role in supporting the people on board. A small thank you today for everyone at sea who carries their part of the responsibility.
