That's why Ottobock released the #DearAI Community Library – one of the first community-built, open-source image datasets – created, selected and annotated by people with limb loss and limb differences themselves, and powered by Microsoft. Now publicly available on Hugging Face, the library helps give AI systems a more accurate, community-defined picture of disability. An online symposium on Neuromobility provided latest insights into the clinical evidence and real-world case examples of technologies such as the C-Brace for people with neurological impairments of the lower extremities, such as paralysis. Leading experts discussed the positive interplay between research and the impressive treatment outcomes. “The clinical data and real-world experience clearly demonstrate that improved mobility extends far beyond walking. When individuals no longer rely on walking aids as a result of restored leg function, they effectively regain an arm, figuratively speaking: their hands are free again, allowing them to perform many everyday tasks independently. As a result, they regain not only functional independence, but also greater mobility, social participation, and quality of life,” said Dr. Andreas Hahn (Corporate Vice President Clinical Research and Services, Otto Bock Healthcare Products GmbH) during the symposium. Ottobock continues strategic expansion of Neuro-Orthotics with acquisition of Fesia Technology, S.L., Spain Fesia, headquartered in Donostia/San Sebastián, Spain, employs around 20 people. The company develops and markets functional electrical stimulation systems, providing them to patients with neurological diseases or injuries to the nervous system. With the acquisition of Fesia, Ottobock is expanding its own neuro-orthotics portfolio to include Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) products. “Neurological conditions are already, and will continue to be, a major topic in the orthotics and prosthetics industry. The number of people worldwide affected by conditions such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, or spinal cord injuries is steadily increasing.
