PROFIBUS & PROFINET International (PI) is the world's leading industry association and an active community for the standardization and dissemination of industrial networking technologies. Many of these are fundamental to realizing digitalization, automation, and Industry 4.0. With its core technologies PROFIBUS, PROFINET, IO-Link, and omlox, PI is responsible for the development of market-leading, open standards for all fields of application in industrial manufacturing. Supported by 24 regional PI associations (RPAs) all over the world, 1,700 member companies, and more than 10,000 different products, PI covers all key markets of industrial automation like factory automation, process automation, motion control and safety-related applications. As of 2022, more than 67 million PROFIBUS nodes, 60 million PROFINET nodes, and 35 million IO-Link nodes are installed worldwide! PI manages the entire value chain of industrial communication innovation, including tools for automated testing, nine accredited test centers, and product certification.   • PROFINET over SPE makes Industrial Ethernet Simpler, More Compact, and Future-Proof Instead of the traditional 8 wires, Single Pair Ethernet requires only a single wire pair. This means less cabling effort, smaller cable diameters, more compact connectors, and greater flexibility during installation - especially where space is limited. At the same time, SPE enables end-to-end Ethernet-based communication from the sensor all the way to the cloud, reducing media breaks and gateways. As a result, users benefit from a simpler network architecture and consistent data transmission across all levels of automation. Ethernet-APL also uses a single wire pair and brings Ethernet into process automation and even into hazardous areas—including end-to-end communication all the way to the field device. The best part: PROFINET over SPE remains PROFINET. All familiar advantages, such as diagnostics, engineering, interoperability, and standardized communication, are retained. SPE extends PROFINET with a more streamlined physical transmission.   • Interoperability is the Foundation of Open Industrial Localization Open standards only create value when they work seamlessly across vendors in real-world environments. That’s exactly what the omlox Plugfest 2026 demonstrated: 21 experts from nine companies validated the interoperability of omlox components in realistic industrial scenarios. Across 48 interoperability tests, an overall success rate of 86% was achieved, while all positioning accuracy tests passed successfully. For industrial users, these results mean more than just technical validation: ✅ Greater flexibility when selecting and expanding locating solutions ✅ Proven interoperability across manufacturers ✅ Reduced vendor lock-in ✅ A reliable foundation for scalable industrial localization The Plugfest, which took place at the Fraunhofer IOSB-INA, was followed by the omlox Conference Day, where live demonstrations and presentations from NXP Semiconductors and Hewlett Packard Enterprise highlighted how open standards and location data are enabling the next generation of industrial automation - and providing the spatial foundation for Physical AI. #omlox #Interoperability #OpenStandards #PI
