Can cement clinker production be fully electrified? SaltX Technology and Holcim have strengthened their partnership to advance electrified cement manufacturing, with the ambition of enabling Europe’s first fully electrified cement plant by 2028. The collaboration combines SaltX’s plasma-based technology for electrified calcination and sintering with Holcim’s industrial expertise. Large-scale technology and material testing is planned at the Electric Calcination Research Center in Hofors, Sweden, during 2026, followed by further work toward industrial-scale clinker production without fossil fuels. This partnership illustrates how electrification could become an important additional pathway for reducing process-related emissions in cement manufacturing. • The inauguration was a milestone. For us, it's the starting point. The inauguration of the CI4C Pure Oxyfuel plant marked an important milestone for carbon capture in the cement industry. But a demonstration plant is not the destination. It's where industrialization begins. At thyssenkrupp Calvion, our focus now shifts to the next challenge: transforming a proven technology into scalable industrial solutions. That means continuously advancing our Pure Oxyfuel portfolio, generating operational experience, optimizing performance and supporting customers on their path towards carbon capture. Depending on each customer's individual requirements, we support the full spectrum of Oxyfuel solutions — from first-generation and second-generation concepts to dedicated Oxyfuel Calciners. Our goal is to identify the solution that best fits each plant's technical, operational and economic framework. Because every cement plant is different. Successful implementation starts long before construction — with feasibility studies and FEED studies that evaluate technical, economic and site-specific requirements. Our goal is clear: to help cement producers assess, design and ultimately deploy Pure Oxyfuel technology at industrial scale. The CI4C plant demonstrates what's possible. Now it's time to make it commercially scalable. We're looking forward to working with our customers and partners to shape the next generation of carbon capture for the cement industry. Are you interested in a study or a suitable concept for your demands? Get in touch with us! #CarbonCapture #Oxyfuel #Cement #IndustrialDecarbonization #Engineering #FEED #FeasibilityStudy #Calvion

  • What if the future of carbon removal is built on the same foundation as the cement industry?   For decades, the cement industry has built world-class expertise in limestone processing, calcination and large-scale industrial operations. Today, that expertise could help accelerate an entirely new industry: limestone-based Direct Air Capture (DAC).   The timing couldn't be better.   Around the world, governments are moving from discussing carbon removals to creating certification schemes, regulatory frameworks and long-term incentives. Carbon removal is becoming an increasingly important part of the journey to net zero.   This creates an opportunity to build on what already exists instead of starting from scratch.   Imagine an ecosystem where: 🪨 the same limestone supply chains support both cement production and DAC, ♨️ proven process expertise helps scale new technologies faster, 🚛 shared CO₂ transport infrastructure serves both point-source capture and atmospheric carbon removal, 🌍 common geological storage enables decarbonization across multiple industries.   At thyssenkrupp Calvion, we believe the next chapter of industrial decarbonization will be driven by exactly these kinds of synergies—connecting proven industrial capabilities with innovative technologies to create scalable climate solutions.   Because the future isn't cement or DAC.   It's cement and DAC.   #DirectAirCapture #DAC #CarbonRemoval #Cement #IndustrialDecarbonization #Engineering #ClimateTech

  • Shaping the future of carbon capture: Catch4Climate Pure Oxyfuel plant officially inaugurated The inauguration of the CI4C Pure Oxyfuel plant in Mergelstetten today marks a major milestone for low-carbon cement production – and for the future of industrial carbon capture. thyssenkrupp Calvion is proud to have contributed to this landmark project together with thyssenkrupp Polysius. The successful realization of the plant demonstrates what is possible when innovation, engineering excellence and strong partnerships come together to tackle one of the world's most challenging decarbonization tasks. The CI4C plant represents the second generation of oxyfuel technology, incorporating valuable lessons learned from earlier developments and moving the technology another step closer to large-scale industrial deployment. This achievement strengthens the foundation for the next generation of carbon capture solutions for the cement industry. "The CI4C Pure Oxyfuel plant demonstrates how continuous innovation and close collaboration combined within a smart investment can transform promising technical concepts into industrial reality. As a second-generation oxyfuel solution, it is an important step towards making carbon capture more efficient, scalable, and ready for adaptation as an industrial standard. I am proud of what the entire project team has developed and accomplished together", says Andreas Lehmkuhl, Project Manager at thyssenkrupp Calvion. With the Pure Oxyfuel technology now becoming part of thyssenkrupp Calvion's portfolio, we are committed to further advancing scalable carbon capture solutions. By producing a highly concentrated CO₂ stream, the technology enables more efficient CO₂ capture and has the potential to significantly reduce emissions from one of the world's hardest-to-abate industries. Projects like CI4C are only possible through strong partnerships. A sincere thank you to our consortium partners SCHWENK Deutschland, Vicat, Heidelberg Materials and Buzzi/Dyckerhoff for their trust, collaboration and shared commitment to advancing carbon capture technologies for the cement industry. This inauguration is not the destination — it's another important step on the journey towards net-zero cement production. We look forward to continuing this journey together with our partners and customers worldwide. #Calvion #thyssenkrupp #CarbonCapture #Oxyfuel #Decarbonization #CementIndustry #NetZero #Innovation

  • 🚀 Building the future of carbon removal — together   At thyssenkrupp Calvion, we’re joining forces with TKMS and Heirloom Carbon Technologies to accelerate next-generation Direct Air Capture (DAC) in Canada. By combining Heirloom’s innovative limestone-based approach with our deep industrial engineering expertise, we’re taking the next step — translating cutting-edge technology into scalable, real-world applications. Our focus: bringing DAC from promising concept to industrial deployment.   At the core of our contribution is the Carbon Capture Calciner (CCC) — a key component of the process — complemented by a concept for electrification-ready platforms from SaltX Technology, enabling a forward-looking integration of low-carbon energy solutions. But just as important is what happens beyond individual technologies: in large-scale industrial environments, success depends on how well everything works together. Ensuring smooth interaction between calcination, CO₂ processing and overall plant infrastructure is essential to achieve a stable, efficient and commercially viable operation.   This is exactly where we come in — connecting the dots and turning innovation into fully integrated, industrially robust systems. And the impact goes beyond technology: initiatives like this can drive the creation of high-skilled jobs, strengthen regional industrial capabilities and position Canada as a leading hub for next-generation carbon removal.   💡 It’s where proven engineering meets bold climate innovation — turning breakthrough ideas into deployable infrastructure.   💬 “We’re not just enabling carbon removal at scale — we’re building the know-how to decarbonize industries worldwide,” says Philip Glörfeld, Chief Sales Officer at thyssenkrupp Calvion.   From Canada to global impact: let’s turn climate ambition into real-world solutions. 🌍   #ClimateTech #DAC #Decarbonization #CarbonCapture #Innovation #thyssenkruppCalvion
