The important question is not "how do we fit more on this screen," but "does this need to be here at all?" In embedded UIs, every screen you don't render saves RAM and rendering cycles. What's driving that shift for your projects? Hardware constraints, or product improvement?
The conversations I used to have: "How do we fit more information on this screen?" The conversations I'm having now: "Does this information need to be here at all?" That's a more interesting question. And it's leading to better products. Something has been shifting in embedded UI design. Teams with hardware capable of rendering information-dense screens are increasingly choosing not to. I've been thinking about why — and what it means for the embedded context specifically. ✅ Where the "more is more" era came from — and why it created attention problems, not just design problems ✅ The three practical patterns showing up in well-designed embedded UIs right now ✅ Why intentional UI matters differently for embedded: rendering cost, RAM, certification scope ✅ The design skill this actually requires (hint: it's harder than fitting everything on one screen) ✅ What it means for state management architecture The question I find most useful: "What does the person in front of this screen need to know right now, given what they're doing right now?" Smooth animations on a microcontroller aren't a given. No dedicated GPU. A Cortex-M33 running at up to 200 MHz. And still: two fully animated industrial touch UIs, both responsive under your finger. That's the GD32F527I-EVAL from GigaDevice Semiconductor Inc. - 480×272, resistive touch - running Embedded Wizard. What makes it work isn't raw clock speed. The GD32F527 integrates an IPA (Image Processing Accelerator) for hardware 2D operations - blits, alpha-blending, color conversion. Embedded Wizard maps its rendering onto exactly those units, so the CPU stays free for application logic while the display stays smooth. In the video you'll see two real-world HMIs on the same board: 1) a paper cutting machine with feed, speed, batch and live output-format (paper size) selection 2) a climatic cabinet with a programmable temperature profile: dwell time, heating and cooling phases, live readout and remaining run time For embedded developers, this matters beyond aesthetics. A GUI that performs well on constrained hardware means more headroom for the rest of your application, and fewer surprises late in development when the interface has to actually run on the target device. A box from the Espressif Systems Singapore team landed at our office, and we couldn’t be more excited! The ESP32-S31-Korvo-1 is a serious piece of hardware. Here's what's on it: - High-end dual-core 32-bit RISC-V SoC at up to 320 MHz - Hardware-accelerated 2D graphics (PPA), a JPEG codec, and SIMD acceleration for edge AI - A 4.3" 800×480 capacitive-touch LCD - A dual-microphone array, speaker output, and a microSD card slot - Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4 with LE Audio - 60 GPIOs Next step is getting a real GUI running and seeing what that bigger, faster display does for animations and transitions.
