Listening Examples
Ten listening examples from production sound recordings made between 1986 and 1993.
Many of these recordings begin with the technician’s own spoken description. These voices are otherwise never heard.

1. Military barracks – Amantes (Vicente Aranda, 1991)
Miguel Polo records the recruits’ drill commands inside a military barracks.
2. Barking dog – Jamón, jamón (Bigas Luna, 1993)
Miguel Rejas records a dog and explains that it is the same size as director Bigas Luna’s dog.
3. Galeries Maldà – Mal de amores (Carles Balagué, 1993)
Ricardo Giestas records the ambience of Galeries Maldà (Ciutat Vella) as it was 32 years ago.
4. La Boqueria Market – Som i serem (c. 1995)
Quim Roca records the voices of buyers and sellers at the market, with no tourists present.
5. A clock that no longer chimes – Tot queda en família (Romà Guardiet, 1986)
The chimes had already begun just before the recording started, in Plaça de Catalunya, where BBVA used to be.
6. Sant Rosa de Agua, Venezuela – Latino Bar (Paul Leduc, 1991)
Victor Luckert records the ambience of the stilt houses beside Lake Maracaibo.
7. Silent room – Latino Bar (Paul Leduc, 1991)
The sound of silence (room tone) in a room in Santa Rosa de Agua.
8. Plaça Reial, from above – Mal de amores (Carles Balagué, 1993)
Ricardo Giestas goes up to a flat overlooking the square to listen to and record its sound.
9. Firefighting aircraft – Pont de Varsòvia (Pere Portabella, 1990)
An aircraft scoops up water to put out a fire. Jaume Meléndez records it after waiting patiently.
10. Columbus’s caravel – La rossa del bar (Ventura Pons, 1986)
Lício Marcos de Oliveira records the interior of the ship (a replica) that used to be in the Port of Barcelona.
