It’s one thing to see the devastation of a wildfire on the news. It’s another to stand in the middle of it.😓 At BiCortex, every employee is given two volunteer days each year to support causes that matter to them. Recently, our Client Services Director, Kirsten Thornton, used one of hers to help a local animal charity responding to the aftermath of the devastating wildfire in Almería, where she lives. Joining a team of volunteers, she spent the day searching the scorched landscape for injured animals and leaving food and water for the wildlife that had survived. Reflecting on the experience, Kirsten said: “The smell of burning was still overwhelming. At one point, on an isolated track, we came across a hotspot that had reignited. Thankfully, we still had water with us for the animals, and one of our group bravely used it to attempt to extinguish the flames while we alerted the authorities. We met people beginning the difficult task of rebuilding their lives, but above all we saw devastation. Surviving wildlife was heartbreakingly scarce, we spotted little more than insects, a handful of birds, and a few lizards. The silence was deafening. It will be a long road to recovery for everyone affected by this fire, both people and wildlife.” We’re proud to support colleagues who use their volunteer days to make a tangible difference in their communities, especially when help is needed most. We’ve also made a donation to Asociación Animalista ELEOS, the charity Kirsten volunteered with, to support its ongoing work rescuing and caring for injured and stray animals affected by the wildfire. #Volunteering #MakingAnImpact #TogetherWeCan

But when it comes to crossing borders, Kirsten Thornton recently had a surprisingly great experience as she landed in San Diego, coming in from Europe.🥳 "Honestly, I had been prepared for hostility, especially as we'd received guidance beforehand from the conference organisers on how to make the process go as smoothly as possible, but he was incredibly kind and cheerful, even giving me recommendations for bars near my hotel and suggesting beaches to go to if I had time!" Kirsten actually crossed several borders, as her group also visited Tijuana, Mexico, during her California visit for the American Immigration Lawyers Association conference. It's Third Culture Kid (TCK) Day! A TCK is a kid who has spent much of his or her early life living in a culture that is different from their parents' homelands and their own birthplace. Here's why supporting these kids matters so much: ➡️In global mobility, much is said about (and spent on) the relocating employee. Sometimes, the spouse is considered. Occasionally, the children's needs are addressed, particularly around schooling. 📌But one glaring aspect that is unfortunately often overlooked -- and unsupported -- is this "TCK" concept. A mix of cultures, a blend of experiences, an assortment of languages, and a world of influences. 🔍A child's sense of identity is fragile, and knowing who they are, along with a solid sense of where they came from, matters. And language is a huge part of this sense of identity. Kirsten Thornton, BiCortex Director of Services, explains it this way: "When we don't support a child's multilingual development, especially preserving their native language, there’s a real risk of destabilising the child’s sense of identity and the whole family dynamic, which we know is vital for not just a successful assignment but a happy child. ...Yet while many global mobility policies put a lot of focus on language training for the assignee, and sometimes their partner, they often overlook the children. This presents a host of challenges." At BiCortex Languages, we consider the needs of the whole family.🤲 (In fact, many of our team members are either TCKs themselves or are raising their own TCKs, so we understand the importance of making sure each family member is supported in a relocation.)👈 If the children are struggling, the parents are struggling.
