📢 NEW EUROPEAN GRANT 👏 👏 Big things are happening at EvoEnzyme: celebrating our role as associated partner in the new SynCell Biotechnology-nExUsprogramme! It is a privilege to share the launch of SynCell Biotechnology-nExUs, a pioneering pan-European postdoctoral programme dedicated to training the next generation of leaders in synthetic cell research. The programme, coordinated by the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry and the @MPI for Terrestrial Microbiology, will run from 1 August 2026 for 5 years, and is co-funded by the European Commission under the Horizon Europeprogramme, through the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA-COFUND) — Grant Agreement ID 101261790. This initiative brings together a consortium of 22 research institutions across 9 European countries, offering 40 three-year postdoctoral positions in four key research themes: metabolism and energy, division and replication, information processing and evolution, and enabling technologies. SynCell-nExUs aims to keep Europe at the forefront of synthetic cell research, combining world-class laboratory training with intensive personal and professional development, and offering fellows career opportunities both within and outside academia through cooperation with industrial partners. It is an honor to be part of this network that will train the next generation of synthetic cell researchers and reinforce Europe's leadership in this field. Funded by the European Union. EvoEnzyme is a spin-off from CSIC, Spain, which focuses its activities in the commercialization of ligninolytic enzymes engineered by directed evolution for the pharma and industrial sectors, together with the development of directed evolution projects. EvoEnzyme has just been funded after over 15 years of research at the Miguel Alcalde group, whose more relevant findings have been transferred to the company. With an ensemble of top-notch technologies, EvoEnzyme offers a variety of methods for library creation and screening aimed at designing customized biocatalysts. The company has a wide portfolio of mutant libraries, including peroxygenases for the pharma industry and chemicals as well as laccases and peroxidases for the long-pursued lignocellulose biorefineries.

A few days ago, we had the pleasure of welcoming 2 professors and 14 students from the @Licence Professionnelle Microbiologie Industrielle & Biotechnologies (MIB) at Université Paris Cité, as part of their international mobility programme in Madrid. We loved sharing what we do at EvoEnzyme and showing them around our facilities. The visit began with a short talk about our story, our enzyme portfolio, and the projects we're working on, followed by a tour of our labs led by Javier Viña and Juan Cerrolaza Martínez, where the group got hands-on with some of our equipment and saw firsthand what life inside a biotech start-up really looks like. Thank you so much for visiting — it was a real pleasure hosting such a curious and engaged group!

Today is a special day for EvoEnzyme. Mikel Dolz Ruiz Dolz defended his PhD thesis today, "Development of biotechnological platforms for the enzymatic degradation of polyesters," at the Instituto de Catálisis y Petroleoquímica(CSIC). Co-supervised by our co-founders, Dr. Miguel Alcalde and Dr. Javier Viña. This is the first PhD thesis defended within EvoEnzyme, and that's why it means so much to us. Mikel is one of the veterans of the house: he started alongside Miguel at the ICP and has grown with us into a pillar of the team. As a Research Assistant, he's the kind of person who not only works hard but always has a moment to lend a hand to a colleague or help welcome newcomers. And beyond his scientific rigor, Mikel is known for his good humor, the kind of positive energy that makes working as a team a pleasure too. Thank you also to the members of the thesis committee, Dra. Auxi Prieto García, Dra.Pamela Torres Salas, and Dr. Mario Mencia, for their time and dedication in evaluating this thesis. And thank you to everyone who accompanied Mikel today: family, friends, and colleagues who made this day so special. Congratulations, Dr. Mikel Dolz. Hace menos de una década, EvoEnzyme era apenas una idea con mucho potencial nacida en el CSIC. Hoy, gracias a healthstart madri+d, celebramos haber sido reconocidos en la categoría de Biotecnología y farmacéutica como uno de los casos de éxito de su primera década de trayectoria. Queremos dar las gracias de corazón a la Fundación para el Conocimiento madri+d por este reconocimiento y, sobre todo, por haber creído en nosotros desde el principio. Programas como healthstart madri+d son el motor que permite que el talento científico-tecnológico de Madrid dé el salto del laboratorio al mercado, y nosotros somos un ejemplo vivo de ese camino. Dentro de la Fundación, gracias a Eduardo Díaz Sánchez, por su cercanía y apoyo constante; a Ignacio Cid Plaza, por estar siempre ahí ayudando a todos los participantes del programa en lo que hiciera falta; a javier villoslada, nuestro mentor, que nos acompañó en la definición de nuestro Business Plan en aquellos primeros pasos; y a Fede Rodrigo, por su "foco". Gracias a todos por poner los cimientos sobre los que hemos construido todo esto. Gracias también a @Mirina Cortés Ortega, Viceconsejera de Universidades, Investigación y Ciencia de la Comunidad de Madrid, por entregarnos este reconocimiento en persona, y a todo el equipo de la Comunidad de Madrid que apuesta por la innovación en salud. Revolutionizing the rubber industry: CHIHIRO Project Kick-Off Meeting! Last May 6th, we attended the Kick-Off Meeting of the CHIHIRO project, hosted by the coordinator, @Moses Productos, in Zaragoza. EvoEnzyme team members, Javier Viña and Mikel Dolz Ruiz, joined the rest of the consortium to celebrate the launch of this exciting project. The initiative aims to support the circular bioeconomy through the development of sustainable, high-performance rubber materials and processes. 📢 NEW EUROPEAN GRANT 👏 👏 Big things are happening this month of May at EvoEnzyme: Celebrating the new CHIHIRO project! It is a privilege to share the launch of the CHIHIRO project, a pioneering initiative focused on environmental sustainability in the rubber sector. The project, which officially started on May 1st, 2026, will have a duration of 45 months and is funded by the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) under the Horizon Europe program. This initiative brings together a consortium coordinated by Moses Productos, along with Celabor srl, EvoEnzyme, Universitat Rovira i Virgili, Deutsches Institut für Kautschuktechnologie e. V., MINILAND GROUP, HOLOSS, GuaTecs SAS and POLYMERIS. CHIHIRO aims to establish the first sustainable biorefinery for the production of guayule latex and rubber in Europe. The project responds to the need for alternatives to imported natural rubber and synthetic rubber by applying innovative methods that allow for the full utilization of guayule. In turn, CHIHIRO will develop new rubber materials for real-world applications, such as household appliances and toys. Among the main roles of EvoEnzyme will be the development and optimization of yeast strains specifically designed to produce polyisoprene derived from bagasse sugars. It is an honor to be part of this project that will reduce the carbon footprint and improve circularity in rubber production. [Funded by the European Union. A day to remember at EvoEnzyme! Today was a truly special day at EvoEnzyme. We have had the immense pleasure of welcoming Enrique Sastre, CSIC Institutional Delegate in Madrid, and Marcos Pita, Director of the Instituto de Catálisis y Petroleoquímica (ICP-CSIC) to our facilities. As a spin-off born from the heart of the CSIC, this visit was not only an honor but also a great opportunity to showcase our latest breakthroughs and celebrate the journey we have built together!. W-BioCat Meeting in Kraków! Last week, the EvoEnzyme team, represented by Javier Viña and Ivan Mateljak, attended the W-BioCat consortium meeting, hosted by the Jerzy Haber Institute of Catalysis and Surface Chemistry, Polish Academy of Sciences. It was an intensive few days of aligning research goals and reviewing the technical progress of the project. We were thrilled to have contributed through the open seminar led by Ivan Mateljak, whose talk on "Engineering enzymes through ancestral sequence reconstruction and chimeragenesis" drew great interest and reached a wide audience. Thank you very much to our hosts for their warm hospitality, from the insightful lab tours to exploring the beautiful city of Kraków. These moments provided the perfect atmosphere for collaboration and for driving innovation forward. [Funded by the European Union.
