The $40 million restoration of George Washington's Mount Vernon home brought together artisans and restorers from all over the world, including French wallpaper specialist Arnaud Fouassier, to install wallpaper traditionally block-printed by hand at New York based Adelphi Paper Hangings. "Adelphi Paper Hangings preserves the heritage of a rare craft, respects traditional techniques and pursues exceptional standards of quality and craftsmanship," said Arnaud Fouassier on a recent trip to meet the team at Adelphi Paper Hangings. Featuring love birds, the 1790s wallpaper design - called Emerson Arabesque - was commissioned by Mount Vernon curators for George Washington's bedchamber. The smallest room gets the Fouassier treatment with 'Les Mandarins' by Zuber. The central pair of figures in the decades-old wallcovering formed the focus in this bathroom installation for Mr and Mrs Zuber, descendants of the famous wallpaper maker, who founded Zuber in the 1790s, making it now the oldest wallpaper manufacturer still in operation. "Arnaud Fouassier is truly a specialist in the installation of Zuber wallpapers and panoramic wallcoverings. The pattern matching is not easy, nor are the painted joins, the colours, and all the little touch-ups that had to be done. The installation is impeccable and I don't think a standard installer would have been able to achieve such a good result," said Mrs Zuber.
