🎮 Over the past few weeks, several researchers at Ircelyon have been playing the online catalysis game developed by Bert Weckhuysen's group, led by Thomas Hartman and Martijn H.. Without giving away too much, the challenge is to produce as much water as possible to survive through the Sabatier reaction (CO2 hydrogenation). 💦 🏆 To make things even more fun, we organized a friendly competition among our master's students, PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, and permanent staff. 👏 Congratulations to master's student Axel Robert 🧑🎓, who earned the title of best catalyst scientist in the game, well deserved! 🧪 The game is challenging and rewards a solid understanding of catalysis, while also providing an engaging way for students to learn fundamental concepts. I'm happy to announce that I've joined the Ambassador Program at Ircelyon! I completed a Master's in Climate Sciences before doing my internship on snowmelt in Grenoble. Since it's such a pressing topic right now with the climate warming, I decided to continue in this direction by working on the thawing of the Arctic permafrost. Permafrost is soil that remains frozen for at least two consecutive years. We can find it where the climate is (still) cold: at high latitudes (Arctic, Antarctica) but also at high elevation (above 2500 m). Its thaw contributes to global warming by releasing greenhouse gases that were trapped in the soil or by the microbial decomposition of organic matter. The aim of my thesis is to understand the volatile organic compound (VOC) emission process from permafrost soils: from its source via microbial activity (production/consumption) to its interaction with the atmosphere in remote areas. Gold isn't just meant to be worn. 💍✨ My field of inquiry 🔍 In my PhD at Ircelyon, I work with gold nanoparticles as catalysts, currently focused on greener ways to synthesise amides from alcohols and amines. A small molecule, but a foundational one: found across pharmaceuticals, materials, everyday chemistry. 🧪 There's a particular kind of intellectual vertigo... 🌀 ...in spending your days with one of the oldest metals known to humanity, only to find it still has secrets to give up. At the nanoscale, gold stops looking like gold. Depending on particle size, it can appear pink, purple, even black. 🎨 The explanation: surface plasmon resonance. Light sets the electrons in the nanoparticles into collective motion, changing how the material absorbs and reflects it. We track this through UV-Vis spectroscopy. 📊 How do I get around these constraints? 🧰 Every catalyst is a negotiation, size, support, preparation. Shift one variable and the entire behaviour changes. ⚖️ That precision is the work: tuning conditions, reading spectra, adjusting again, until the material does what the chemistry requires. 🔁 It's what I love about this field. I’m happy to announce that I’ve joined the Ambassador Program at Ircelyon as a first-year PhD student working in photoelectrochemistry!! If you’ve ever wondered what that actually means in simple terms, think about those little solar-powered dancing flowers people put on car dashboards that start wiggling whenthe sun hits them. That’s basically how our lab materials behave! Instead of just generating electricity like a standard rooftop solar panel, our materials are light-sensitive. The moment sunlight hits them, they instantly jump into action and use that energy to drive chemical reactions. Over the next few years, my goal is to harness these solar powered materials to try and build a working device that turns biomass into green chemistry! 🚀 Happy to join the Ircelyon Ambassador Program! During my PhD, I am studying catalytic reactions related to the isosynthesis process, a catalytic route that converts carbon oxides and hydrogen into valuable hydrocarbons such as isobutene. ⚗️ My research focuses on understanding the role of the CO/H₂ system while exploring the potential of CO₂ as an alternative carbon source for isobutene production. 🎯 The challenge? Understanding what really happens on the catalyst surface… where molecules sometimes have their own plans! 😅 🔎 Why does it matter? Isobutene is an important building block for fuels, plastics, and many other applications. By exploring new ways to use CO₂ as a feedstock, we aim to contribute to more sustainable chemical production. 🌱💡 Excited to share more about my research journey, the world of catalysis, and life as a PhD researcher at Ircelyon.
