One in five lower secondary teachers across OECD countries entered teaching from another profession (and the share is rising!), but only a fraction of education systems track them systematically. A new OECD working paper examines who these second-career teachers are, how they are prepared, and how they can be retained. 🔎 Key findings include: ▶️ Second-career teachers are more likely than their first-career colleagues to teach in classrooms with a high concentration of students with special education needs or from minority backgrounds, placing them in some of the most pedagogically demanding settings. ▶️ When it comes to how prepared they feel, second-career teachers report broadly similar self-efficacy to first-career colleagues across almost every domain, with one striking exception: classroom and behaviour management. ▶️ Contract precarity is a distinctive risk: second-career teachers are significantly more likely to hold short fixed-term contracts, and they perceive teaching as a less secure profession. OECD data is making a difference around the world. At the OECD Impact & Dissemination Peer Learning Meeting, Ioana Joanna Marinova, Executive Director of Lachezar Tsotsorkov Foundation shared how Bulgaria turned findings from the Survey on Social and Emotional Skills (SSES) into systemic change. In Bulgaria, students were more likely to miss school, had lower educational aspirations, and face bigger socioeconomic gaps in empathy and creativity than the international average. The Foundation used these results to drive a targeted advocacy strategy, from a national launch event in Sofia to engagement with the Ministry of Education, teacher universities and NGOs. Results from this included: ▶️ The Ministry of Education took over management of SSES.  ▶️ Social and emotional learning (SEL) is now embedded in new national curriculum development.  ▶️ A National Programme for SEL in primary education launched. ▶️ A National Centre for Positive Education opened.   Data alone doesn't change systems.
