Comparison of Dimmable Electromagnetic and Electronic Ballast Systems—An Assessment on Energy Efficiency and Lifetime

There is a common misconception that energy saving is always equivalent to environmental protecti... more There is a common misconception that energy saving is always equivalent to environmental protection. Compared with electromagnetic ballasts, electronic ballasts have a much shorter lifetime and are not recyclable. This prompts new concerns about their environmental impacts due to the accumulation of a huge amount of toxic and/or nonbiodegradable electronic waste components and materials. In this paper, the combined use of a central dimming system with low-loss electromagnetic ballasts is compared with electronic ballasts. Experimental results have confirmed that the use of a central dimming system for large electromagnetic-ballast-driven lighting systems can be as energy efficient as electronic ballasts. Considering the long lifetime (> 30 years) of electromagnetic ballasts and the recyclability of their magnetic chokes, this paper shows that such combined technology can provide an improved environmentally friendly and energy-saving solution for large-scale electric-lighting systems, particularly for lighting systems in large public areas. Due to the elimination of many electronic ballasts, this proposed technology has the potential of drastically reducing a huge amount of electronic waste. With the positive results obtained in this paper, it is hoped that international regulatory organizations would reconsider their current policies and promote lighting technology that is both environmentally friendly and energy saving.

The experimental characterization of gate capacitance in nanoscale devices is challenging. We rep... more The experimental characterization of gate capacitance in nanoscale devices is challenging. We report an application of the charge-based capacitance measurement (CBCM) technique to measure the gate capacitance of a single-channel nanowire transistor. The measurement results are validated by 3-D electrostatic computations for parasitic estimation and 2-D self-consistent sp 3 s * d 5 tight-binding computations for intrinsic gate capacitance calculations. The device simulation domains were constructed based on SEM and TEM images of the experimental device. The carefully designed CBCM technique thus emerges as a useful technique for measuring the capacitance and characterizing the transport in nanoscale devices.

Power-Law detector based on DFT is developed to detect a moving dim target under heavy infrared b... more Power-Law detector based on DFT is developed to detect a moving dim target under heavy infrared background. Because that the grey-scale value of a pixel in an image occurs fluctuation when a target passes by, this fluctuation can be viewed as a weak transient signal, and the Power-Law processor has advanced performance on transient signal detection. Firstly, a time window, length of L frames, is introduced in the algorithm. And then, the current frame at the center of the window is processed with max-median filtering algorithm for the clutter suppression and the adaptive threshold segmentation is used to obtain the candidate target pixels. The improved Power-Law detector is used in the window to detect the transient signal caused by the true target among the candidate pixels. The experimental results show that the algorithm can reliably detect dim targets with SCR larger than 1.

Extraction of both genomic and viral nucleic acids from whole blood has been demonstrated on Si-based microfluidics. Rapid amplification has been achieved by polymerase chain reaction in Si-based thermal reactors (micro-PCR). Detection has been realized by a chip-to-chip integration of the micro-PCR and micro capillary electrophoresis (micro-CE).

Lamp performance based on two ballast topologies is compared. The dimming range and stability control of the MH lamps are addressed. Dimming range from 100% to about 30% has been achieved. It is found that the combination of ballast topology and dimming method can affect the dimming performance.

A novel detect algorithm of dim and small infrared target 9 based on temporal chi2 test, which aims at disadvantages of algorithm complexity, large amounts of data to process, high capacity memory demand in concerned algorithm, is proposed. Theory basis of 9 temporal chi2 test is described in detail and recursive formula of concerned statistics is given and detection performance of the algorithm is analyzed. The algorithm is very easy to realize because the whole algorithm need buffer one frame image only. The results of theoretical analysis and experiments show that the algorithm can detect targets which SNR is no less than 2 and move speeding image is no less than 0.5 pixel per frame.

Dimming Characteristics of Large-scale High-Intensity-Discharge (HID) Lamp Lighting Networks using a Central Energy-Saving System

This paper summarizes the test results on several large-scale lighting systems based on a range o... more This paper summarizes the test results on several large-scale lighting systems based on a range of high-intensity-discharge (HID) lamps. The study focuses on the energy-saving, energy efficiency and dimming characteristics of magnetic-ballast-driven HID lamp systems that are suitable for public lighting networks. A central energy-saving unit that can change the input mains voltage of 220V to a variable voltage within 220V to 170V is used to control a large lighting network. This central dimming unit offers a new freedom for users to use lighting energy when and where it is needed and to an appropriate power level. Lamp characteristics under full and reduced voltage operation for 6 types of high-intensity-discharge (HID) lamps have been measured. Six large-scaled networks of ballast-lamp sets have been set up and dimmed with a central energy-saving unit with a rated power of 13.2kVA per phase. The full load current under test was set at about 40A per phase. The loss of the energy-saving unit on a per-lamp-set basis was measured at different voltage levels. It is found that the energy-saving unit can reduce overall system power at least 40% without causing lamp flickering. Through the controllable voltage range, there is no obvious change in color temperature. The lamp power and light output decrease almost linearly with input voltage within the range from 170V to 220V, and the power loss of the energy-saving unit is less than 2.4% of the full power in all tests. For these large-scaled lighting networks, it is envisaged a 25%-35% of energy-saving can be achieved in large public lighting applications

We simulate room temperature capacitance-voltage characteristics of silicon (Si) nanowire gate-al... more We simulate room temperature capacitance-voltage characteristics of silicon (Si) nanowire gate-all-around MOS structures with radius ≤ 10 nm using a self-consistent Schrödinger-Poisson solver in cylindrical coordinates with full treatment of the transverse quantum confinement. In this paper, we compare our simulation results with the latest capacitance measurements on single Si nanowire pMOS and nMOS devices in the subfemtofarad range. We also propose to probe the density-of-states features of the Si channel from the capacitance-voltage characteristics at room temperature measurements using dC/dV dependence and illustrate the idea by employing the latest measurements, our quantum and Medici (Synopsys) simulations, as well as a simplified analytical model.
