Interview with Brian McLaughlin from Orange Logic
With 25 years of SaaS leadership behind him, spanning marketing, sales, customer service and technology, Brian McLaughlin brings a multi-disciplinary perspective to his role as CEO of Orange Logic. Having previously sat on the user community side of DAM as a COO and CMO, Brian is now leading a vendor whose mission is to take the chaos out of large-scale content operations.
In the latest interview in our series, Brian addresses what he sees as DAM’s defining shift: from passive library to active operating layer. His assessment is direct:
“DAM is not about storing files. It is about capturing the intelligence around content.” [Read More]
Brian explains how this intelligence, covering metadata, versions, rights, usage and performance, is what allows both people and AI agents to recompose, localise and personalise content confidently at enterprise scale. He is candid about where this can go wrong: governance bolted on after the fact rarely survives contact with a real enterprise. In his experience, marketing, IT and legal each tend to assume another team is managing risk, leaving gaps that only close once governance is built directly into everyday workflows.
“Time and time again, it teaches me that governance must live inside the DAM as an active control layer and embedded directly into everyday workflows. It cannot be bolted on later, and those who try to add it after the fact will quickly find it doesn’t work.” [Read More]
Looking ahead, Brian envisages two converging shifts: adaptiveness and autonomy. He describes an ‘agentic DAM’ capable of autonomously running key content orchestration processes, with agents, workflows and APIs working together to manage content across the full supply chain.
“It will not be a passive storage system, but an active, unified fabric where shared context allows automation, orchestration, and governance to happen naturally in the background.” [Read More]
Brian’s biggest ongoing challenge mirrors this vision: balancing scale with simplicity, particularly for large enterprises managing regulated media estates that must remain reliable, compliant and low-risk, even as AI accelerates the volume of content produced. His greatest success, he says, has come from watching organisations stop treating DAM as storage and start treating it as part of their operational backbone.
