W przestrzeni publicznej ("na wolnym rynku przypadkowych spojrzeń" mówi Peter Sloterdijk) muśnięcie wzrokiem, przelotne bycie widzianym nie nakładają się na siebie, nie zagrażają podmiotowej autonomii. Spojrzenia (wy)mijają się, czasem krzyżują. Ich przedłużonego spotkania nie tłumaczy znajomość czy jakikolwiek inny element poddający się interpretacji; choć pojawiają się ulotne komunikaty (na przykład uśmiech), momentalne zbliżenie stapia się z fundamentalną obcością. Intersubiektywne "krótkie spięcie" (lecz nie przejście od stanu "obcości" do "znajomości") trwa sekundę, po czym odwracamy głowę, by wrócić do uprzedniej roli. Bez tych barier-równie koniecznych, jak granice między światem żywych i umarłych-niemożliwe byłoby stworzenie świata społecznego. W jego ramach spełniamy zarówno nasze pragnienie bycia z innymi (zbliżenia), jak potrzebę odróżnienia się od nich 2. Czasami dystans znika. Spojrzenie przebija niewidzialną otoczkę (niewidzenia, bycia niewidzianym), wędruje ku nam, byśmy mogli się w nim dostrzec, tworząc "wyjątkowy stan intersubiektywny" (Sloterdijk). This analysis of the directorial work of Weronika Szczawinska, based on an interpretation of her ... more This analysis of the directorial work of Weronika Szczawinska, based on an interpretation of her production How to Be Loved , demonstrates the staging strategies that the director employs and the main characteristics of her poetics. Mościcki shows that Szczawinska’s theatre is radically epic, its key element the ability – named after Walter Benjamin – to make gestures quotable. Gestures are used to stage memory as choreography or to penetrate ever deeper into the mechanisms of oppression and formatting.

Do we really see images in singular, as singular images with singular subjects? What is singular ... more Do we really see images in singular, as singular images with singular subjects? What is singular and what is plural in the experience of seeing? It seems that every time one is gazing at a picture, its effect on their senses depends on the unique constellation between the inner character of representation and the inner set of subjective conditions. However, one could also claim that in this encounter with the image, there is more than one level of possible mediation each time the individual undergoes the inf luence, or the intervention, of plurality, or even something that one could call commonality. There is no innocent gaze; in every singular act of seeing, a whole set of social, political, and cultural mechanisms and factors are at stake. In some sense, this singular act is also-every time-a claim for the possible universal community, an invitation to the imagined collective. It could be called tradition as well as a cause or utopian vision of political collective. In any of those instances, the crucial figure involved in the experience of the image is the one of sharing. What is shared through, within, around and in the images? And what else is or could be shared in the shared images? Uncanny Tradition I would like to discuss those questions by referring to Averroes (Ibn Rushd), the most eminent Arabic philosopher from the twelfth century, who was mostly known in the Latin Middle Ages as a great commentator of Aristotle. Averroes is also famous-although one should perhaps say infamous-for his idea of the unity of the intellect. It was not only severely criticised by the main philosophers and theologians of his time, but his books were also repeatedly banned by the Church (with various effects). Eventually, his main philosophical thesis was marginalised and ridiculed. Jean-Baptiste Brenet, one of the leading scholars responsible for the renewal of Averroes's scholarship today, entitled one of his books Averroès l'inquietant (2017a), referring to the Freudian notion of the uncanny to underscore the degree to which the thought of Averroes haunted and, at the same time, terrified Western philosophers. Averroes's thought seemed to pose a threat to Western reason, as it was constituted within the continuity between ancient Greek philosophy
