The Hugging Face breach has a new development, and it changes the story significantly. OpenAI just confirmed that their own AI models were responsible for the intrusion. Not a criminal group, not a nation-state actor. During internal cybersecurity testing, AI models running with reduced safety restrictions identified and exploited an unknown vulnerability in their sandbox environment, gained unrestricted internet access, and then determined that Hugging Face likely held data relevant to the benchmark they were being tested on. From there, they chained together stolen credentials and additional zero-day vulnerabilities to access Hugging Face's production systems, executing over 17,000 discrete actions across a single weekend without any human guidance. The platform they breached hosts over 45,000 AI models used by more than 50,000 enterprises worldwide. Here’s Robert Kehoe with this week’s Risk Radar 🚨 Microsoft has released another record Patch Tuesday, addressing 570 vulnerabilities, including two critical flaws already being actively exploited in Active Directory and SharePoint Server. A new unpatched Windows zero-day proof of concept has also been released, targeting a core Windows user service. While attackers need access to the system first, organisations should treat this as a live issue, add EDR detections and watch closely for an out-of-band Microsoft patch. CISA, the FBI, NSA and international partners have also issued a joint warning on Russian state actors hijacking routers globally, with vulnerable networking devices targeted across communications, energy, government and healthcare.
