This monsoon season, we are witnessing extreme flooding across India—in the mountains, the plains, Delhi, Mumbai, and many regions nationwide. Isn't it way too much for just one season? I wondered the same, and it all became clear after reading a newsletter by @Mridula Ramesh ma'am. It connects the changing water patterns with climate change. As average air temperatures rise, the air holds much more moisture. Those familiar with thermodynamics would immediately link this to the psychrometric chart. Air saturated with more moisture, when it condenses, leads to downpours and even cloudbursts—causing more frequent flooding. So, the next time we get stuck in Gurugram's jam after flooding, maybe we need to blame ourselves a little too! If we don’t act now to tackle climate change and environmental damage, these extreme weather events will only become more frequent and severe. At the same time, droughts are becoming harsher. Hotter air dries the soil faster, intensifying water shortages in other parts of the country. In fact, about a quarter of India’s territory recently faced drought conditions due to shifting monsoon patterns and rising temperatures. These twin threats—floods and droughts—are two sides of the same climate crisis coin. This is one of the main reasons I started Dharaksha Ecosolutions—to build carbon-negative materials that can help delay this climate crisis. It’s why we chose a field which is perceived to be very risky by experts. Because if we don’t take optimistic, even illogical, bets today, it might be too late.
