Glad to see the students fighting systemic injustice here. Happy to be interviewed for this segment. Also mentioned how student activism has always brought about change— from South Africa and the struggle to end apartheid, to our US fight for Civil Rights, to Bangladesh just recently. The young people and students will inherit these institutions and shepherd them. Their fight is to improve them. Catch me on this episode, about 3 min in.
Seven weeks ago, India’s CJI called unemployed youth “cockroaches.” The rest was history: satire, memes, a 26-day protest against a compromised medical entrance exam affecting 2.5 million students…ridicule weaponised against actual weapons… It ended in a minister’s resignation, unprecedented in this govt’s two regimes. The government scrambled: punitive laws, fast-track courts, a task force led by Aadhaar architect Nandan Nilekani. But we’ve been here before. A similar crisis in 2024 led to 101 reform recommendations. Many, from an overhauled NTA to digitised exams, are still not implemented two years on. In this episode of The Morning Brief, Anirban Chowdhury speaks with sociologist Anindya Kundu, PhD, communications professor Usha Raman and ET’s Anubhuti Vishnoi on virality, political identity, power, and the gap between reform and implementation. There's a lot being said about these protests, and it's hard to arrive at a definitive analysis of the form, the content, the outcomes...but one must try, and that's what we do as media/communications scholars. Had the opportunity to offer my two bits here.
