AI tools wrote about 80% of a recent product we worked on. We wrote the other 20%. That 20% is the reason it actually shipped. Here's what that 20% looked like in practice. It wasn't the code. It wasn't the UI components. It wasn't even the database schema. It was the stuff that doesn't show up in a prompt: The decision to scrap a feature two days before launch because it was confusing real users - not test users. The call at 10pm where we told a founder their onboarding flow was solving the wrong problem entirely. Catching a payment edge case that would've silently failed for 12% of transactions. Rebuilding a component from scratch because it technically worked but felt wrong - and "feeling wrong" matters when your users make a judgment call in 3 seconds. AI is extraordinary at generating. It's not great at questioning. It'll build what you ask for. It won't tell you when what you asked for is the wrong thing. That gap - between what gets generated and what actually works in the real world - is where the interesting work happens. We're not against AI tools. We use them every day to move faster.
