An important recent innovation in these areas is the deployment of separate networks dedicated to server administration and related tasks, combining the cost and productivity advantages of remote administration with risk levels comparable to console-based administrative access. Remote server administration is a previously undocumented artisanal tradition that evolved in scientific and technical network environments, and is now becoming applicable to an increasing range of business networks. This tutorial article provides an overview of current server administration network architectures, and of the software, workstation, and user interface technologies associated with remote server administration.

In the family of programming languages derived from the C programming language, the order of eval... more In the family of programming languages derived from the C programming language, the order of evaluation of expressions between sequence points is left undefined and may be counterintuitive. While most programmers assume that this lack of a defined order refers only to a lack of preference between left-to-right and right-to-left sequential evaluation, the standards actually permit, and language processors implement, a variety of non-sequential evaluation orders. In some cases, particularly those where expressions containing sequence points are combined without an intervening sequence point, computed results can be unanticipated, and can vary with different compilers for the same code. Yet these results fail to trigger any warning from compilers or syntax-checkers. Because languages of the C family dominate Information Systems curricula and new business application code, the risk that code in those languages may give incorrect results without any warning from automated tools presents significant hazards against the integrity of financial calculations. This article explains those hazards and outlines countermeasures.

Under a generalized praxeological definition of scarcity there are contexts in which the scarcity of software becomes negative, so that a rational maximization of return on investment in developing such software occurs when the software is opened to free distribution under a GPL-equivalent license.

The cognitive advantages of dialectical study have led to its adoption as a powerful, general cognitive methodology, for example in Extreme Programming (Beck 1999.) This article describes the authors experience with formally assigned dialectical study in a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses in Information Systems at California State University, Los Angeles.

Under the assumption that the position of items in the strength distribution about the mean is du... more Under the assumption that the position of items in the strength distribution about the mean is due to random variability in perceptual processes at the time of retrieval, the strength-resistance theory fitted the data quantitatively without significant deviations, the Z 2 value falling between the median and the 90th percentile of the applicable Z 2 distribution. The strength-resistance theory also accounts for qualitative observations left unexplained by other theoretical schemes. Although quantitative theories of memory date back at least to Ebbinghaus (1885), the size of experiments necessary to check such theories discouraged later workers, so that qualitative approaches have been, and still are, the rule in investigations of memory. The introduction of laboratory computers has changed this situation; the present note will use data from a recent qualitative study (Glenberg, 1976) to evaluate two contemporary quantitative theories. STRENGTH-RESISTANCE THEORY The key concept of the strength-resistance theory of memory dynamics (Wickelgren, 1972, 1974a) is trace strength; retrieval occurs only if this variable exceeds a threshold. The response latencies measured in the experiment indicate that this procedure effectively eliminated fast-guess strategies. The recognition signal-to-noise ratio, d&#39;, grows at a negatively accelerated rate as the allowed retrieval time is increased from 0.5 second to 1 and 2 seconds.
